I have a paver patio project that needs a 1.5 ft high and 10 ft long wall at one end, and i was going to use the paver base to fill in behind the wall !
its only about 3 ft behind the wall then it will be to the grade to use 4 " of base.
any other sugestions

Thanks, Mark

I use 2A gravel as a paver base which has limestone dust in it for compaction. This material makes a very poor backfill. The walls stability will be jeopardized not using a clean backfill. I actually saw a wall locally that fell over due to this reason.

i agree with lh you want to give some sort of a guarentee and the price to you is not much different especially for something that small

Only use a compactible stone to backfill your first row or buried course. After buried course you need to back fill with a clean stone, we use washed 2b. Lh is exactly right your wall will eventually fail due to the pressure the compactible stone will cause on the wall. Clean stone for drainage!!!

Mark, is the wall supporting part of the patio, like a raised patio?

Thanks guys! sorry i didnt put this in first , i always put washed stone behind the walls that are just landscaped behind but this one has the pavers out to the cap blocks.

I think the best solution is to backfill the wall with a clean stone until you have a foot left from the top cap. Then place down a geotxtile and put your paver base on top and then compact, put your dust, pavers. etc. to meet the desired grade.. This should keep your fines out of the wall backfill and solve your problem. Hope this helps you out.

If your pavers are running to the wall then you can backfill with the same aggregate you are using under the patio.

Thanks Mike

kinda thought that it would work with a 1.5 ft wall
