The new Zs and super Zs have a larger discharge opening and this is what it looks like. I got the plans in order ti cut it out and then did it. Will improve cut quality.

When you have a Bac-Vac,would this not be a problem!Because that is where the propeller houseing hangs.

If you have the old bac vac you will bave to buy an adapter/bracket but the new ones will already come with it.

Crappp..... Believe me, I hate being the sour puss here, but I still stand by my thoughts that this is a band-aid treatment. What I mean is, I do believe opening the discharge up will relieve some discharge pressure. But I don't believe it's a silver bullet cure for everything. In other words, I see other areas that could be improved.

I'll stop there and I hope I have not offended anyone....

But by all means report back about how it does and what difference it makes.

I will get the NEW blades tomorrow. I believe that the larger opening and new blades will improve cut. May not be huge but I dont feel that there was a problem to begin with. No offense taken.

I thought everyone that had the Hustler mowers were happy with the cut. Why the change?

I'm with Envy on this one. The deck needs more help than a larger opening. The recircalating baffels need removing.

I love it. Thats the kind of stuff that I
visit this site for. There should be a separate
category for modifications, I love to tinker with
my equipment. OEMS do some strange stuff to
satisfy their legal departments. There are lots of things
the Engineers/Designers want to do that they cant for liability reasons.

Save the piece, if it does not work out
just weld it back on.

I had a Cushman front line 72" that rusted out
at the same discharge area, Cut better and better as the rust
advanced. Until the deck crumpled all together from belt force.

Thanks for the post

I was working at a dealer a couple of years ago and the Hustler rep brought us a demo for a week. It was in spring with lush grass and it clumped terribly. I would assume opening up the deck would help. I liked the mower except for the clumping.

I had my deck cut last week. The hustler representative sent me all the info on how and where to cut the deck. I can already tell a difference in the discharge. I already have the new blades and I have to pick up my spacers tomorrow. Hopefully this will solve all the problems.

Sorry, you guys are making the brand looking bad... why eXmark, Scag, and Toro and other owners don't have to tamper with this way?
Oh well. What makes one works might not be working for another.

We have 3 Hustler's all that give a great cut. However, for wet grass it will probably be better. We'll have to see.

Just to make sure everyone fully understands, I DID NOT just decide that I would cut the deck. This is how the new decks are on the hustler but they provided plans for anyone wants to change the old deck.

Received my "Turf Central" on Monday, there is a field test on the Super Z outlining this enhancement. Good article and it seems that this mod is assisting with the clumping issue. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"Clipping dispersal is aided by a newly designed deck opening. The trailing edge of the deck opening is cut at approximately 45 degrees. This larger opening does an excellent job of reducing/preventing clumping."
