My engine has started to sputter excessively. I have cleaned the carburetor and tuned it to every possible position, but it won't work right. Sometimes it will run smooth but then 10 minutes later a flame followed by a loud sputter comes out of the muffler, especially under a load. How can I correct this?

I`ve had this lil problem in the past,..check your flywheel gap,..flywheel key,. and if that won`t work, try and making sure the valves are gaped right.

Well, I never did check any of the ignition components. I have been paying most of my attention to the carburetor. I did noticed that the valves have no gap, I can't even fit a bussiness card between it. Could it be the airgap between the coil?

It would be a good idea to check the coil airgap. Also check the flywheel key. it could cause the engine to get out of time slightly and cause the problems you are describing.
