I placed a help wanted ad in the paper which started today. I received just one response in my voice mail and it didn't sound too promising. I can't believe nobody needs a job............?

My goal of expanding is not going as planned. I put out a couple thousand fliers this spring and only received a handful of responses... which equated to only 2 mulch jobs. Looks like I may remain solo for another year. :(

People figure why work for you when they could just start there own lawn business.

Something has got to give, this is getting crazy. :help: :dizzy:

Yeah, my problem is not the work but rather the competent people to get it done. I have been looking for another maintenance foreman for months now. Good workers keep getting harder and harder to find. ;)

Lawn-Scapes, Where in MD are you? I only mow 3 days a week, and may be interested in helping.

I havn't had the problem with finding work just finding good people to work. I wouldn't advertise in the paper though you get every bottomdweller out there calling you. I just ask around if anyone knows of someone needing to work. I like guys with no experience they are easier to train.

I'm feel the opposite. I'd rather have someone with experience. No time or patience to train.

Your not the only one is Carroll county with this problem. I swear there are 20 new guys in mount airy alone this year. I got offers from a two buddies to come work for them a few days a week as a crew chief because I am coming up short with work.

The only good news is my neighbor is a property manager and wants me to bid on a 450 unit apartment complex in Baltimore. Buts its an hour away.

Lost quite a few account this year. @#$%##^*&#%$%*&*(&^ scabs. :gunsfirin :gunsfirin :gunsfirin It scab season.

Move to the Northwest - I put an ad in the paper last month, got about 50 phone calls, interviewed about 25 of those for just one open position.

Has nothing to do with need, has to do with wage. People expect to get a lot for doing labor but don't understand you have expenses or that it's a highly elastic demand business. Take this guys ^ advice and advertise in a hispanic paper and you may get a better response.

opposite here,,,,I get at least 2 call s a week from people wanting to know if I'm hiring. They get my # from the YP or (classifieds last year). One guy said he was tired of working for this big LCO in my area for $8.... 60 hrs per week. I Don't blame him.

I'm getting close to needing a full time person. Friend of mine from my old "real job" helps me part time now.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I own Marcus Drake Consultants, we are H2B recruiters. We normally supply 2000 people to the green industry. I don't have to tell you what happen this year. Maybe in the future I can help the guys on this site with the help of Sean Adams and his great staff. I keep my prices at a reasonable level so you can be successful with great guys that want to work and need to work.

Hey, bull dog, I heard of the h2b issues this year but, normally, how does this work, how are the costs structured, etc. I am in Vt., it isn't common around here yet so I am curious of what the logistics are what the expense is.The labor market is pretty tight here and I think it might be time to be one of the first around here to try something different.

I plan on staying here for another 18 years. Then I will sell out (that would make 25 years of landscaping and thats enough) I have already tried to buy a few accounts will no success. I raised prices because of gas and suffered dearly for it. But did get rid of a few minor PITAs in the process. :)

Side note:
I did see you running around main street in Westminster on Monday. I might have a customer with a 36" walkbehind that he might part with for you.

hired a friend of our family last week. He's just 15 & not much experience. But he is working out fine so far. Never asks what time we are getting off or complains. Plan on using him again next summer & maybe another high schooler if I have enough work.
