View Full Version : double blades tried it
Listen boys bout this double blade thing.
Lets not tell nobody else about it huh.least in carolina
Dont mean to be selfish but most o these
guys got youth on me.LOL:d
Learning this is going to be fun,it really does
look like it has great promise.
Kinda makes me wish i had more motor though,as it
did pull the engine at fastest speed.I may be able to
correct this with a different bld. combination.
I started w high lift on top, gators on the bottom.
Mabe standard on top and gators on bottom any ideas welcome.DANG THAT WAS FUN.:D
as you can see my first effort at smilin crashed
I got you smiling now AWM ;)

AWM - I've been using double Gators (standard) for mulching leaves all fall and I plan to leave it like it is for the spring. The two Gators seem to create plenty of suction for me and they sure chew things up.
Me to homer me to.Just remembered where that
comes from.Thats all earl scruggs use to say
to lester flat on beverly hilbillys.
You may not be old enough to know about that.:)
Ill have to get another set of gators likestomow
are you at 20 hp or stronger than that.
i have ask lco if they have heard of dbls .
where i used to get blades they all thought i was crasy.
well the lco could have better looking lawns and the dealer could sell more blades, who's crasy now.
Now that I know less dont tell nobody else.:)

JBR, I have use double blades for the past 13 seasons, so I think it is pretty much field tested by now. There is nothing to it, instead of putting one one blade per spindle, you put on two. Try using what blades you have now. Put an old worn out blade on top if you don't have two good sets. Try different combinations to see what works best for you.
I think low lift bottoms, gators on top
decreased the drag.Imowed at 2 inches
so I could put as much drag as I could on.
At top speed didnt hear the engine struggle any.
So another problem solved.
Now somthing different.
For those who are leary of stress on the spindles
My opinion is it seems to give more balance
less vibration. The only thing I can figure is
if youve played jacks you know that a jack
has four sides.A two sided jack dont spin so good.
Also it seems to me im picking up a gyroscope
effect as with four sides you create something
like three motorized GYROSCOPES which should have a stabelising affect.Might not be anything to this but
these are my first observations.Nows the time to give
credit,so Eric my hats off to you. thanks

Awm,
I found the regular blade on bottom and gator on top works the best. Everyone will need to see what works best for them, but I found the gators on bottom seemed to make more drag.

would dbl highs work?
I aked this once before, but I want to make sure. Don't you need to use like a 1/4" spacer between the blades or just stack 'em?

THe double blades idea any combo with the gators for leaves has been a life saver. All I can say is love it!!!

VLM, the Double Blade Dude says you just 'stack em', thats good enough for me.

You can put a spacer in there, but if you use a 1/4" spacer plus a 1/4" blade, I would get 1/2" longer bolts.

I tried double highs lifts on my 60"Dixie chopper.I dont have enough HP to pull them, the motor strains to much.I only have a Kohler 25,with a stronger motor im sure it would work.
John i run them on my 52" walkbehinds, i rig them just like 65hoss. Reg on top and Gators on bottom. Ive only got 16hp and they work great.Seems like your 25hp would have no problems. Marks Mowing Service
Sorry i meant reg on bottom and Gators on top. Marks Mowing Service ps no one around here has ever heard of this system. Even me untill i read Erics Post last yr.
When you fellas say regular blades are you
talking about high lifts or the low lift
type blade.
John it seems to me that two sets of high lifts
might be your problem.I can feel it when i
go from low lifts to high lifts single blade.
Hope this gives you some ideas.Good luck

I was responding to bababooies,post-he asked if double hi-lifts would work.I usually run doubles in spring, and fall, and in the summer i run just one blade. My 25 is one of the bad ones,(its a 2000)so it really labors with doubles, unless i run a std lift and a gator, then its not bad.So thats what i run in the fall/spring.The motor runs so much better with just one set ,its runs cooler nad uses a lot less fuel.I run singles mostly to keep dust down in the summer, the doubles really kick up way to much dust, and since the grass isnt growing that much anyway-the cut is fine.

I run the Hi-Lift on top. Regular blade on bottom.

TRY TRY AGAIN :
Well my experience with the double blades wasn't all that great for leaves, my mower Xmark Lazor 60" would blow the leaves away from the deck before any mulching could begin, and YES I had the blades on the right way. I tried several different ways using a reg-blade on the bottom and the gator on top. The company that I bought the brackets from said to reduce the engines horse power, but that didn't work either. But I'm anxious to try them this spring on regular mowing, maybe better lines in the lawn who knows ?
RNH,I was thinking thats first air flow problem
Ive heard of w doubles. Are you sure the deck is right
front to back. Also mulching sometimes requires a
little lower cut.Mine didnt seem to have any
front air push.Hope you solve your problem.
Well I tried lowering the deck just for that reason, but with the piles of leaves I was trying to mulch, I ended up plowing them forward instead of mulching them. Funny thing was the vacume on my mowing deck was great on the side of the deck, but as you went head on into the pile then the leaves would begin blowing away from the deck. I changed back to just the single gator blades and spent alittle more time mulching.

On my Walker 52" side discharge, i have double blades mounted with the saddle that comes with the mulch kit but, i left the mulch plates out. it has been working great. i ran a Walker 16hp with this set up and put my hand held tach on it and the engine rpm's remained the same, when i added the mulch plates, i dropped about 20 rpm's.

BryanB:
I'm going to teach you how to use the search page I made, but first of all go to my Website and click on Double Blades and read about it a bit and see the picture of how they go on a mower.
Next go to the middle link below and click on it, then scroll down to double blades. There are so many threads on them I had to make 2 searches for them. Click on one and come back and read the rest. I hope this helps.

My mower is a Xmark with a Kholer 26 horsepower EFI, runs great, BUT, I've tried several different ways with the double blades, and it keeps doing the same thing. No biggie I'll just keep on trying, I'm bound to get it right sooner or later.

Bababooie,
I run doubles on a great dane 32" with a 8.5hp Briggs. I figured that engine wasn't going to last long anyway(it was all I could afford) It works great, mulches beautifully and I think it runs smoother than with just 2 blades. I just throttle down and engage the blades slowly. I have my eye on a Kawasaki 12hp, but I'm not replacing this one until it is completely thrashed.

what brackets are you talking about? do they hold the blades in place to keep from spinning differently? and how do you stack the blades? across eachother or lined up?

Walker calls them saddles # 8691-10 w/ 5/8" hole, about $7 each. they keep the blades aligned in an + formation. I found that on my side discharge these work fine, but on my GHS's I just bolt them blade to bladein the + formation.
Check out Erics website for more info.

When mowing grass with double blades, you steam full speed ahead.
But when mulching leaves with double blades, you back up and crawl over the leaves. This way they won't blow out and will mulch nicely. After they are chewed up some, run over them going forward. A little practice and you'll get it.
