My 99 Wright Stander, 17 horse Kawisaki, 980 hours, today I was mowing along, lost power for about three seconds, then a great puff of black smoke then it cut off and that was it. Locked up tight, cannot even pull the starter rope at all. Think it blew? Or maybe just a ring broke? Now what.....my only other mower is a 36 inch walkbehind

Sounds like it is very bad. You can get a complete engine at j-thomas or smallenginewarehouse that arent too expensive. There is one on e-bay that may be your engine the e-bay # is 4378393900. Buy it now $825.

Sounds like it may have. Did it knock or bang before it did that.

Aren't you in High Point? If so I "might" be able to get you some help on your lawns if you need it until you can get back up to speed.

Yep it is gone. Sorry to hear that. My motor blew on my exmark ztr two years ago. Thankfully I had a 52 inch walk behind as back up. Hope all goes well for you.

Well guys thanks for the replies. Not the answer I was hoping for but.....No it did not make any noise just slowed down, blew smoke for a second and then shut down. I thought of Jthomas or a new engine at least but I am nto sure it would really be worth the investment in that mower.

MM- yes I am in High Point. Thanks so much for your offer. I will see how tom. goes. I will send the guys on to the residentials while I try to make a decision on what to do. Maybe I can rent a mower from Weno or Triad L&G to get me by a couple days. I will let you know. Thanks again.

Ok second question...Shouldnt it have made it longer? I mean thats really not that many hours. I keep up with the maintenance very well.

Last question, I did check J Thomas. The engine is $849 plus shipping. It looks like that is complete, as in just unbolt the old one and put on the new, is that correct? Mine does not have elec start but I can have it on the replacement engine for $90 more. I think it would be worth it, but would it work ok since I dont have it now? Thanks

Creative I sent you a PM with a web site. Hope it helps. I am ordering a 25 Kholer command just to have it on stand by to replace my 22 command that has over 4000 hours on it. Even though it still runs strong I want an engine available at a moments notice.

Surely it's not as simple as unbolt the old and bolt on the new?

My 15hp Kaw quit on us last fall, only had 1400 hours. Valves stuck, bent push rods, etc. I think what killed mine was the plugged up air passage that goes from the carb area to the head, I found it after I took it apart. I bought a 17hp Kaw engine from J Thomas to replace it.

Yes it is , Really. Remove clutch, throttle cable, fuel line and 4 bolts. Less than 1 hour to swap.
