I want to re-do my flower beds and thought about using the 12" back locking retaining brick found at Home Depot. If I am only going up 2 or 3 levels, do I need a porous base (gravel, limestone etc). It will be about 65' Long and no higher than 3 levels. I am planning to dig out and half bury the first level.

Depends on your soil. If you have clay you will have to dig it out and put in the correct base. If you don't your wall will be wavy within the first couple of years. If you have lots of sandy loam then you can get away with it, but its always better to over build then cut corners and pray.

Pretty much clay here. How deep would you dig for 2 levels, with one level half buried? Can I just get away with a couple of inches of limestone sand as a base? Thanks!
PS, this is just a border, It will not be holding any soil back or "filled to the top of the backside"
