It's one of those dang "automatic choke". It idles up and down to the point it almost shuts off. I can see the choke going back and forth. Any ideas?

Craftsman pushmower, 6.75 hp, model 917.388610, about 2yrs old (estimated, bought used) It runs like crap due to the up and down idle and I can watch the automatic choke going back and forth.

Probably going to be water in the gas, or just in the bowl.

Or maybe a clogged air filter.

Correction of that model #, I gave the deck model. The engine model is 143.016702. Thanks

Its going to be like beransfixitinc said water or trash in the carb. and or air filter,Clean the carb. out with carb. choke cleaner,Check the air filter and replace the plug. Tecumseh carbs. have a non cleanable check valve in them,If you clean it and it still has the same problem you can buy that carb. for around $40.00 .

Thanks for the info. Greg,I just wanted to make sure Tecumseh didn't slip one in on me,The only auto choke carb. I could think of is the old Briggs pulsa jet.
You did save me some look-up time !
I do have all my dealer web sites on my home computer,Thanks again.
See Ya

I'm sorry I made a mistake,Its the smaller Briggs carbs. that are in the 40.00 range,This carb. is in the 65.00 to 70.00 range. I just brought my dealer webs home a couple days ago and have yet to down load Tecumseh pricing.
Sorry again for the mistake.

Hello all, I'm brand new to this site and I have a Sears/Craftsman Lawnmower with a model number 917.388610. The problem is that the carb on it leaks gas from a tube that connects to the primer bulds internal workings inside the carb itself and from a small hole below the primer bulbs tube when i think connect to the bowl. Any ideas of what's wrong or what can be done to stopthis from happening? So much gas leaks that I basically stopped it from further use and took the gas tank off.

First Welcome !

If you have any problems in the future it would be to your benefit to start your own thread instead of jumping on the tail end of a old one, Most people will skip the old ones.

Now, It sounds like you have a bad float needle valve and seat or a pin hole in the float.

Purchase a 631021 needle valve kit and a 631028 bowl gasket along with a can of carb & choke spray cleaner.

Tear the carb down and spray all ports/passages and jets out with the carb & choke spray cleaner with the little straw. Shake the float in one finger and a thumb, If fuel is inside you will feel it and it will need replacing.

Replace the float needle valve and seat, With the float in place hold the carb up side down and the float should be just a little higher than level. Re-assemble and give it a try.
