I'm interested in getting into hydro seeding. Does it have sod results or is that just advertizing, if you know what I mean?

Nothing has results like sod does, because it's instant gratification and green lawn.Hydro's more for hills and slopes and soil errosion in my opinion.

Granted sod does offer instant gratification BUT hydroseeding is a very cost effective way to get a great quality lawns at the fraction of the price of sod.
If you find someone who installs sod very well you probably will not be disappointed but i've seen alot of sod jobs which look like complete crap. With hydroseeding it's alot easier to fix if its not sprayed in a uniformed and consistent fashion and still cheaper to fix .
There both very good ways to get your green on.

You can get crappy work with sod or hydroseeding and just about anything else you hire done. Sod's big advantage is the instant gratification. Thats it, period. Sod might be weed free when planted but thats because it has been heavily treated with herbicides. to keep it weed free requires more herbicides. You can apply herbicides to a hydroseeded lawn also so no money saved using sod. Prep work for sod is just as labor intensive as prep work for hydroseeding but hydroseeding is a lot more forgiving if you have a bump or lowspot in the surface. If the surface sint smooth a sodded lawn can actually have voids between the sod and the soil. Poor prep=poor results with sod and hydroseeding. Sod is grass with its roots clipped off. It takes more watering to prevent dieing off, more moisture neccessitates more chemicals because of fungal problems. Hydroseeding has no roots because it is just seed, with using seed your choice of turf grass is a lot greater than with sod. Because the seed grows it roots on site, the roots will usually grow deeper and result in less drought stressed turf. Sod turf is planted extremly dense, this denseness results in competition between the grass for everything from moisture to food to root space. Its not unusual for a sod planted lawn to thin itself out overtime unless strict fertilizing schedules are adhered to. A hydroseeded lawn will comein according to the amount of available moisture and plant food that is available to the grass. This results in a less stressed plant and makes hydroseeded lawns more forgiving to improper care. Nothing will live without food or water and neither sod or hydroseeded turf will give you a maintenance free lawn. Hydroseeding just gives you a lawn at a much cheaper price than sod. It doesnt turn green overnite but if it is applied correctly, using the right materials, you will be mowing most grasses in about 4 weeks.

sod comes from seed, hydroseeding is applying seed with organics and a starter fert. All things being equal in care & prep, when you buy sod, you are only buying time. Time doesn't come cheap.
