View Full Version : sand level in the joints

What do you guys do about the level of sand in joints? Do you fill all the way up which leads to the sand running when it rains the first time? Do any of you leave it halfway? Just wondering what everyone does, I usually fill it to the top but have customers ask me to come back and sweep it again a week or two later. I know there are products out there to like polymeric bonding sand but no one wants to pay extra for it. Not a real problem for me but sometimes an inconvenience.

Usually I fill it up a couple of times and run the plate packer over the bricks until no more will go in, sweep it once more and then I rinse it with the hose before I leave the job. This way, you are acting like the rain and will not have to go back and sweep it again.

Thanks, yeah I pretty much do the same thing except not with the hose. It seems to me that somehow I have too much sand though. I guess when it starts getting hotter and the sand is dryer it will be easier to sweep in. It is miserable here today, just enjoyed my first nap of the season :)

When using a generation one paver they should be filled up to the bottom of the chamfer. Tumbled pavers are simply filled about 1/16 from the top.
We sweep ours, then use a blower and it leaves the perfect amount in the joints.
