View Full Version : What's the best lawn bible??

Looking for the end all publication on lawn care/maintenance.
Not looking for a sales book that just advertises products (scotts, ortho, etc....)

Anybody have any recommendations??

Theres isnt one out there

EVERY climate and town is diffrent

Everyone has worked hard to see what works and dont work

What I do as far as fert wont work for the guys in the next state over nor what they do will work for me

as grass masters said, there isn't "one"...there are some great reference books out there though, that do cover a wide range of areas. Depending on your skill level, they range from "All about lawns" (a nice basic background for entry levelworkers/homeowners) to Turfgrass Ecology and Management for those of you with a serious fetish for grass! A good set of reference books and website links will take you pretty much any where you want to go.

Just looking for a decent reference book on grass species, insects, disease, seasonal info, watering, fertilizer, etc. I have seen a bunch of these books but they end up recommending their product for a particular solution - ie. grubs -- use Grub-ex. Not looking for a sales book. I want to know what the best herbicide, persticide would be. Like seeing 2,4-D as the recommended solution. Then I can research my options.

If it doesn't exist then that's fine but I would think that there has to be something that is fairly comprehensive out there. They do teach classes on this stuff so there has to be a decent text book.

When the books are written most are written for the companys to use as marketing tools your right.

Let us know what type of grass you are looking for and Ill look in my reference libary to see what I can find.

In the mean time the best research tool known to man is www.google.com

there is not an end all, be all, in a book that is an outline for running your business. Agronomy is not taught from a single book in a single class, covering every species of turfgrass and the products for it's care. New innovations and products hit the market every single day from sources as diverse as people themselves. It's a ever growing field of never ending roads to travel. All you can do is keep reading, asking questions and watching the results locally to figure what works best in your situation. This is why people with experience cost more. = )

Just picked up a used 5th edition of "Turfgrass Management". This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help.

That WOULD be a great book. Also, I was in Home Depot the other day, and set up in their lawn & garden dept. is this large reference book. It has pics of all different conditions, diseases, weeds, insects, etc.. It also has all te recommendations for them. This book wasn't for sale, it was just a reference. I'll find out who it's by.
