What rate do you pay for workmans comp ins? I think we are paying 8.24, or 8.76. Interested to see what others are paying in other parts of the country.

Last I checked I think I was at 11.5%. I have to renew my policy shortly so I'll know for sure soon.

Most of us are Sole Proprietors. No employees means no Workman's comp.

In NJ, there is a "landscaping" rate and a "lawn mowing" rate. Mowing is $4 and change per 100 and landscaping is around $11 or $12. Since 72% of my company's revenue is derived from mowing, I am allowed to select the mowing rate and save a ton of $$$.

Suggest you call your agent and see if you can do the same....my broker is the one who brought it to my attention btw.

Here in NY it's 9.34 per 100 plus a NYS assessment charge. We had our payroll audit for April 04 thru March 05 and just got our new bill. Total due is over $25,000. Part is for last year what we underpaid and than the balance is for this years policy. They want $16,000 now and than two payments of almost $5,000 before the end of the year. Not sure what we are going to do since we don't have that kinda $$ laying around. Immediately started reviewing financials and am in the process of downsizing.

Here on the east coast we pay 8.76 per $100 & than have a further "Experience Mod Factor of 0.94

Soooo on say a $1000 pay roll is $82.34 for W/C which works out to 8.234 %

I'm glad someone asked this as it seems I'm paying a higher rate than many of you and I do mostly mowing as well. I wonder if this is largely dependent on the insurance company or if it is more dependant on the state you are in.

Here in Ohio we pay .004166 x payroll for the period = amount owed. So far it has been coming out to about 2.35 per hundred. Should mention that I get a large group rate discount thru the BBB!

Rod..Some companies, like Selective, make you use the higher rate, landscaping over Lawn maintenance and do not care what percentage of each that you do, which sucks. We do 30% in landscaping and are charged the higher rate because they said they would cover both under landscape but not both under lawn maintenance and if someone was to get hurt...oh well. Difference with Selective ( I Will look it up ) is 3.84 per 100- lawn
6.34 landscaping, Now since we are both in NJ shouldn't we all pay the same?

Yes, and that is exactly why I dropped Selective years ago.

Hartford is charging me 9.3% after you figure in the the expense constant, terrorism premiums and all the other bullzhit. I dropped the workmans comp coverage this year. It is optional in Texas. There is just no way to keep that coverage and mow lawns for the going rates here in the DFW market.

Rod, What company do you use for your insurance. I have had meetings with several other companies in the past two years and selective pretty much had the same rates and they were by far the cheapest for snow. Zurich is my carrier for Workers comp not Selective, they will not do your workers comp unless you have 25 employees now.

In Tennessee the rate is $10.74 per $100 of payroll (min. $750 annual premium) plus $180 fee charged by the State. This is the rate for landscaping. In TN we do not have a seperate rate for mowing.

We are a sole proprietorship, but we have a contract that requires W/C.

I use a broker to handle my insurance stuff. My WC is with Liberty Mutual, my commercial insurance is with Ohio Casualty Group, and truck/trailer insurance is with West American.
