View Full Version : Truck insurance, full coverage. What are you paying?

What are you paying to insure your truck/trucks? Who is your insurer? I'm paying $4,344 a year for full coverage on a '92 2500 pickup with Nationwide. It seems like I'm paying too much. Age makes a big difference too I guess. I'm young.

Bailey..
i was payin around $2k for insurance on my ranger b4 the accident (17 y/s old), i have no idea what it will be now... :fearful: of what it may be now!
but $4k for truck insurance sounds outrageous

I think bailey would be better off gettin basic insurance if his insurance is $4k a year... a '92 2500 series can be had for about $5-6k

Dump the "full coverage"...COMPREHENSIVE (fire & theft) & COLLISION (collision...duh!) on a 1992. No reason to carry it on a truck that old. Insurance is on ACTUAL CASH VALUE BASIS and the ACV on a 92 truck is going to be about $2,000. Just carry LIABILITY on a car/truck over 7 or 8 years old.
I have 2 trucks...2001 F-150 & 1998 F-250...I still have FULL COVG on both...costs me about $1538 PER YEAR for $1 million liability & $250 Comp & $500 Collision deductibles. Insurance goes by TERRITORY RATING...and you are out there by all the EAST COAST CRAZY PEOPLE in NY & NJ & MA, so I'm sure that is part of the reason yours is so HIGH!

The truck is being financed, so I must have full coverage. A+ Lawncare, at age 17 you are covered under a parent name. at age 17 I was paying 2,300 per year under my parents, same company. I have a history of 1 faulty accident, 1.5 years ago, which would also cause a price increase. They just increased my insurance $950 more per year, never told me why. I'm looking for a cheaper way out of it. The truck has ran into $5,200 in repair costs since purchase, and is worth a lot to me now with all the new parts (engine, tranny, front end, etc.)
Kelly blue book values:
Trade In= $4,050
Private Party= $5,405
Retail= $6,850

oh and if you get a 3.0 it deducts money off too.... and last quarter I gotta 3.1, which is really good for me, so I saved a little cash there... nonetheless, if you get a 3.0, you save cash, so let your insurance co. know.

I'm paying 1400 i think a year for a 96 f250. When I switched it to commercial it only went up 50 bucks a year. I only used to drive 6,000 miles a year (its a great way to save on gas money, either I don't go places or I have friends drive :D ) and when I talked with the insurance company I said to make it full commercial and I'd expect to only drive 12,000-15,000 a year. I believe this is with geico or progressive, I'm under 25 single, just no tickets.
Insurance is such bs on vehicles, I had a 88 s10 and when I bought the 96 powerstroke my insurance actually went down 150 a year.

How do you get a customer to sign a legally binding contract.....mowing or blowing or pushing with blade....you are 17.................don't know any state that would stand up in a contractual dispute......your LLC has only minors listed?.............................com'n Mark....what's the deal?

I dont have them sign a contract simple as that. Right now im doing a 28k install. No contract, they gave me half upfront and they pay half at the end. None of my customers know im 17. most think im atleast 22.
the business is in my pops name because they wouldnt let me get it in my name, and luckly my dad was with me when I went to lansing to get the llc or else I would have made a useless trip because they wouldnt let me put it in my name until I was 18.
Plus around here NOONE uses contracts, it scares people away around here.... only time people do is for commerical lots... and all my lots are owned by freinds and family and I have no need to make them sign a contract.
in this business its more of WHO you know, now what you know, and then its How MANY people you know.... and those 3 things have helped me out tremendously!

Mark the crowd around here appreciate the straight story to begin with..........and most realize what to believe and what to have reservations about, not saying you lied however you seeem to have abit of deceptive manner..... customer thinks 22,no contracts, 28k install?.............f the only way to protect yourself and if something happens and you trying the only 17 can't touch me you will be jacked by some judge for "deceptive business practices" not to mention FRAUD..........(Worse case scenario....some joker ends up with Mom and Dad's house because of something you do). PLEASE consider this since your mom and dad are obviously involved but more importantly..........THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU!.............Good luck

Well I've known this customer a while, and know there wont be a problem, after this install the most expensive install im doing is going to be 9k, until im 18 and have it all in my name.... Last thing I need is something to come crashing down and have it all be my parents fault when it really is mine, but just because my pops signed that paper its his house thats goin up for sale... so I see what your saying, however everything has special circumstances.
man you make it seem like im trying to cheat the system some how. im not im just working with what I have... I plan on being very sucessful in life, and only way to accomplish that IMO is start young, which is what im doing.... Hell I started at 14 pushing 6 driveways a storm

Yea i'm with Mike, thats very scarey to do a 28K dollar job with no contract. Thats alittle insane actually. My luck I'd get f'd and never see the other 14K at the end. "What are you talking about, we had a friend do all the landscaping here, we don't even know you" i'd cry.

I was just informed by my agent yesterday that since I switched companies (same agency), the new company wouldn't handle my trucks under a private policy. I have to have a "commercial" policy. This is costing me $1800 per year for 1. '77 Chv. 1 ton, and an '89 3/4 ton 4 whl dr. P/U. Can I do better? I have had a regular policy for the 21 years I've been in business. I was paying around $800 per year for both trucks.

Mark I never implied you were cheating of any sort....I just think it shows some indiscriminate stretching of facts and being straight.....and yes "deceptive business practices " will get you bannedfrom ever holding a biz license or permits etc...........FOR LIFE IN SOME STATES. Mainly I think you need to keep learnign and do the best you can but remember that it all is moot if things go bad......and yes I'd start contracting and get legal all around. Mike

4,322!!!!! WAHHHHHHHHHHH 2 years of paying insurance at that rate and you could buy another used truck! I'd take my chance and put the least ammount of coverage on that thing as possible.. maybe $70/month or less!

I fully understand that you can't enter into a legally binding contract until you are 18. I have never seen tho where a contract was needed to own a vehicle? Yes I'm 37, but I still don't have a contract with the state to own my vehicles. My wife didn't even have a license when she bought her first car. Granted, that was a few years ago also. I also have title to a camper and a personal watercraft, there sure isn't any contract with the state for those titled vehicles either. Show me the law where it says owning a vehicle enters you into a legally binding contract.

I think it might be different in MI. I have had a bunch of stuff in my name, trucks, trailers, wave runner. Never have had a problem with it and be being under 18. I think MI might be a little more lenient towards motor vechicles, because I've also noticed when I went to some other states to buy some cars with my bro, that they had inspections, we dont have that here either.
