1st Oil Change

I have about 5 hours of cut time on my 17/42 fastrac and I am ready to change the oil for the first time. Any suggestions on what type of oil works best in this unit? Should I change the filter? Do I get the filter from my dealer or is it a common type filter that they would carry at a Fleet-Farm store?

Your filter is a standard Kohler filter.
I would use a good quality oil, not the cheap Wal-Mart brands... and change that filter also.

Yes.
Cooler running temps and longer oil change intervals would be a couple.

read your Kohler owners' manual. it says synthetic is ok, but not for the first so-many hours. i'm at work and don't remember what the hours are for starting to use synthetic.

i just checked the kohler website. they don't recommend switching to synthetic until after 50 hours of use.

You don't prefill the oil filter...you are thinking of a hydro filter...
