Mowerman, that down here is known as virginia creeper. It does look just like poison ivy except the extra 2 leaves. I am about as allergic to poison ivy as anyone on LS. I have turned down jobs because of it.

Could be poison oak or even sumac. It all sucks in my book! Virginia Creeper isn't poisonous...but it looks much like what is! :dizzy:

sounds like virginia creeper to me also. Could be poison sumac it has 5 leaves as well, but my money is on the creeper. We have a lot of it here and people think that its poison ivy.

Virginia creeper is quite poisionous, just not quite the same way as poison Ivy.

Virginia creeper as far as I know does not cause any problems. If it did I would be the first to get it! :D I have pulled/handled a bunch of it with no problems.

As I said, not quite like poison Ivy. It contains oxylate crystals which CAN cause irritation. If ingested it can cause difficulty breathing, diarrhea, nausea as well as mouth and throat irritation.

There is an Ozark folk name for virginia creeper, "five-leaf poison ivy." But I have never heard of anyone having a reaction just to virginia creeper. I would guess there are lots of times someone is pulling it out of a bed or fencerow, and does not notice there is also some true poison ivy growing mingled with it. Growing up the trunk of a tree, they are just about indistinguishable from one another--I have to look up until I can see leaves.
The stuff is hard to pull out of ground cover, because the leaves and fine strands easily break away from the larger vines, and it just re-grows.
