Well here is the story, a new replacement trans is part number 918-0551A and cost $300. All that is needed for this one is 618-0318 clutch collar and 611-0112 detent shaft which comes back as NLA. The unit is model number 13AZ604H063 serial 1C179H10060. It is a 1999 unit. The owner just left it at our shop because he was not willing to pay $300 for a new trans and we could not get the parts from MTD to fix it. One of the shop tech took it home when we did spring cleaning instead of the scrap yard. He has been looking for parts to fix it since last summer. He asked to to check for him on line because he knows I play around on the net. Every parts house I have checked says they do not have the parts and can not get them. From what I have been told MTD had a lot of problems with this trans and they sold 3 times the parts (618-0318 and 611-0112) as they did trans. The clutch collar (618-0318) on this unit is a laminated parted made out of half a dozen metal layers welded together. It was a bad design and kept breaking and when it would break it would also break the shafter fork (611-0112). MTD just gave up and quit using it and went to using a trans 918-0551A which uses a one piece clutch collar and a differant shifter fork. I was hoping tnat maybe Tecumseh/peerless or Spicer and some one had made this for MTD and the parts could be gotten from them.

Looks like it would be easy to make, if you knew someone with a machine shop. What's the purpose for the laminations? Can this part be made from solid round stock?

Cheap, cheap said the little Birdie. To stamp sheet metal plates and weld them together was cheaper than making if from soild stock or powder pressed. The replacement transmission uses powder pressed parts for this just like the gears are made. It was an idea to save a few pennies that did not work.
