View Full Version : Tree Trimming - Do I need to apply anti-bug paint/gunk?

Not that it makes a difference, but this is on my own property.

I know there is this paint/goo that you can apply to areas where you cut off a branch to prevent insects from entering and ultimatly killing the tree. Is this nessasary? Does the type of tree matter? I will be taking limbs off a pine and a crab apple.

i would say no. most studies show that a tree will heal faster on its own rather than tree paint etc etc.

No and be sure you leave the branch collar intact,it contains the hormones that starts the sealing over of the wound.Never make a flush cut,leave the collar you will see were it starts at the base of the branch.

That's right...no paint, tar or other substance is required. Leave the collar intact.

Why then do I see some put that "paint" on the limbs??? Just a ? from one who does not know?

Presumeably becasue they don't know any better.
