We've discussed equipment maintenance till we're blue in the face. Now, what about yourselves? Do you guys drink? Smoke? Eat health foods? Go jogging? ect.ect. Mowing gear in good order is not much good if you're a gasping wreck. Me? I smoke 20 a day (Lucky Strike Lights new here, good smoke) I drink socially with occasioal "bender" on the rum. Don't do jogging but been thinking of joining a gym. What about you blokes??
Karl

I remember once I exercised. I was pushing a self propelled Snapper 21". Forget that crap used my exhaustion as justification to purchase a new ZTR. That solved the problem. Other than that I enjoy the occassional drink, don't smoke and live with four ladies, 8,12,17, and my fiance (status achieved as payoff for letting me buy the ZTR). So Im have been attempting to get in touch with my feminine side. I never realized how flawed I was until surrounded by all these women who "care about me". I am on the way to your general neck of the woods there Southside. Going to Hawaii for a couple of weeks next weekend.

Karl,
My poor 30 year old body probably thinks it's about 50. Comes from smoking 2 packs a day, eating wrong, and too much idle time.
Now that I'm back to working hard outside again, the poor 'ol body is screaming bloody murder.
But I'll be back in shape again soon, just don't know if the old lungs will recover. Can't kick that awful habit.
As to the liver situation, I also abused that hard in my college days. But it seems happier now that I'm married and slowed down the booze consumption. The 'ol lived still does appreciate a beer on occasion. Think it used to get mad at me when I tried to drown it however.

Walkerrider, have fun in Hawaii.Seems odd that
you would go on holidays when your season is only just starting??
Jason,LOL. Smoking is an awful habit but I
also enjoy a good smoke and it's an excellent
stress releiver.Almost as good as rum. :)
Karl
Southside. The Hawaii trip was the second part of the payoff on my Walker. The engagement ring allowed me the Mower and the trip let me buy the options without having to listen to it. Seriously, My girl is great and I read an acticle about a honeymooning couple who went scuba diving out your way and the tour boat left them behind. Apparently the sharks got them. Now if I could just get here to try diving I could probably get the Kubota Diesel upgrade upon my return.

Walkerrider, No one know what happened to that couple who disappeared.Common theory
here is that they staged their own
disappearance.
Orkin, major bummer about the allergy.Your
liver should still be ok at 16!!
Karl
Karl,
I use a walk behind so that and the heat keeps me from gaining weight. Lift some weights to keep toned. Eat a diet of cheeseburgers and pizza, wash it down with diet Coke.
Like to drink once a month with friends, where I consume around twelve Rolling Rocks. I smoke about 10 cigs during that evening, but only when drinking. About once a year I drink to where I wake up feeling like I was dragged through Hell and beaten over the head with a **** bag.
Did some jogging last year in winter, to icey to run safely up here in eskimo land.

Loading everything in the morning and fighting with the Scag is workout enough for me. I'm 30, smoke some, drink less. No health problems. Low cholestorol, low pulse. Hell, with all this I'll fall over from a heart attack tomorrow!
In my other line of work as a firefighter/paramedic I see some things that are yours and my worse nightmares. Bottom line in my thick skull is - you dont make the rules. It dont matter if you are young or old, rich, poor or somewhere in between, when the numbers up your gone. You tell me why little kids die and the smoking drinking wife beater dies at 83. If anyone of you are asked when and how ya want to go please call or e-mail me asap.
Enjoy your life and your family. Good Luck.

They got a new operation out for acid reflux that cures it. I read that in the paper today. I drink Lite beer. Not as much as I use to though. I try not to eat any sugar. No smoking. No nutra sweet or asperatame. They have a sedetive affect on me. Fast food junky. One cup of coffee in the morning

I work out at least 4 days per week including weight training and about 4 hours of aerobic activity (running on treadmill or stationary bike). I'm almost 34 and have been doing this for about 20 years-yes since age of 13. I don't go as hard and heavy as I use to but I still do enough to maintain what I have gained over the years. The squats have taken there toll on my knees but with 400mg of Advil and a 10 minute walk they usually loosen within an hour. Before I quit my job last year at a local company I would work out after work, now I have to disipline myself to go in the morning before I do anything else. When I went to fulltime lawncare I skipped most of my workouts through the summer last year because I wanted to get an early start on mowing. Starting early allowed me to get done sooner but than I was to tired to work out. So now I'm in the gym at 7:30 and don't start mowing until 9:00 to 9:30. On days I don't work out I start mowing about 8:00. I can say by the end of last season I could feel the effects of skipping all those work outs, so over the winter I started working out again and got back into my previous shape and feel a whole lot better. I don't see how anyone who does this job with the exception of a 20 year old could sustain it over the long haul without including some kind of exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise. It definately helps on those 95 degree 100% humidity days.
I would encourage all to include some kind of exercise into their daily lives. You'll definately feel the difference, mentally and physically.

MOW ED
Couldn't disagree with your statemant. It's your time, it's your time. Can't forget my first DOA when I was a C.H.P. officer. A duece crossed the double line and went head on into a semi. The driver of the rig was thrown into a tree branch, the duece only had cuts and was mumbling about his car.
I smoke. I drink. But I work my _ _ _ off all the time. Plus the wife makes me do chores around the house when I take a day off. Would I change my life, no way! Landscaping and maintenance is one of the best jobs where you get excercise, and see the efforts of your hard work.
----------
J-LC Landscaping & Maintenance Gardening
C-27 Ca Contr# 770044

In high school I used to lift & work out. Now work is my workout, & I don't lift weights-they're too heavy -LOL.
I actually got to the point where I looked at it that weightlifting is a perfect way to use up your energy source for the day & leave you empty. We all know that's untrue, but it feels like it.
I've gone to church most all my life, so I guess I've been spared from smoking & drinking, which I'm thankful for. I tried smoking at 13, & my other family members smoke, but never appealed to me. One less needless expense- I need to keep what little $$ I've got! :)
My food diet is another story. I should be a major shareholder in Little Debbies for all the $$ I've given them over the last 16 yrs.
Trying to cut down on constant snacking, & my high metabolism isn't keeping up with all the junk food anymore, so I'm trying to eat healthier.
For excersise, I unhook my WB sulky & walk behind it every so often-WHEW! Been awhile. But I have been blessed with good health, & am thankful for it, & am trying to keep it that way. I HAVE noticed I can't bounce around like I used to over the last few yrs.
----------
Smitty ô¿ô
Age 32. I haven't had a 21 year old yet that could out work or out run me. Don't know how long it will last. In the winter I hike 6 miles per day if time allows. When I sit, I get sick, I can't stop moving. I'm like the logger on the log in the water, spinning it with his feet in one of those competitions. I can't stop untill I fall off.

I'm 38 now and so far I feel pretty good, I weighed 175 last December and have probably lost 10-12 pounds in the last month and a half. I usually put on my winter coat and get sort of lazy when the days are short but regain that "SUPERMAN" energy after a few weeks into the busy season. I do smoke, wish I had the gonads to quit, but I like it too much or it likes me, one or the other. I don't drink enough to say I drink anything, I would be a real cheap drunk. I'm a firm believer that anything that alters the reaction time of the brain has got to be detrimental to you somehow. I don't even drink coffee, never have and at my age I probably won't pick up that habit. My wife calls me a coke addict, Coca-Cola that is, I have to have one in the morning and every hour after that! Blood pressure is always good, cholesterol is 150 and triglycerides are good. Pulse rate is in the 60's at rest and hair is falling out at a steady pace! Other than that I will do a 12-14 hour day and work these yungins in the ground! I ain't sceert!
Homer

I have been to church all my life. I still cant see the relation between moderate drinking and religion. Hey you can abuse anything. Food, caffiene, drugs etc. Look at all the fat a**es that go to church. They will probably die early from obesity than anything else. Those lard buttes are abusing their bodies. Studies have shown that drinking in moderation is healthful. And please dont quote the Bible to me. I have read it several times. No one in this universe can live to the perfection of the old testement.

Dont smoke, dont drink, even after walking behind the machine all week I will still go hiking around the reservoir with the kids on the weekend, I have asthma and allergies but regular doctor visits and medication keeps it in check.
I commented on a blacksmiths anvil I spied under a workbench in a shop one day, nice cast steel, the kind you buy new for 1500 bucks. The guy laughed and told me if I could get it in the back of my truck without any help I could have it. It now resides on my workbench, all 180 pounds of it, and I would bet the guy isnt so willing to wager his tools anymore.
Bill

Hey guys. I'm 40 and feel like 50. Been cutting 20 years. I had 15 skin cancers burned off my arms last year. Been thinking about getting back into shape, but by the time I get home, I'm beat. I'm trying to wear long sleve shirts to deal with the sun factor.
----------
Bobby
Ft Lauderdale

Well I guess i'm in for it. I smoke two packs a day and cigars at night, my doctor told me only one drink a day,so it's a quart mason jar of Scotch (Glenleven). I used to run every morning but too much to do now. As to eating right too much red meat in my diet, which reminds me I should lose about 20 lbs. other than that i have no problems :)
----------
paul
Bobby:
Skin cancer is a concern of mine. I use 30 sun block every day even in the winter. People think that I am dark complected but I am not I'm just out in the sun 10 hours a day. I can't stand hats but I do wear sun glasses which seems to save my eyes.
I do have some family history of skin cancer. It's not a pleasant thing for certain. How do you cope with being in the sun with your history?
