how to top Dress a golf green

I recently installed 1250 sqft of 419. My intentions are to make a putting green. I need to know whether to just use sand or if there is something better suited for filling in grooves between sod roles.

What's the soil base underneath? It is suggested to stay the same to prevent layering. Most people build there greens sand base so it will drain well and produce smooth rolling surface.

When top dressing the green at work with pure mason sand. After the top dress has been over the green we use a sand probe with bald tire and a large broom 5 feet to broom in the sand. Make sure you got lots of water to the green or it will burn up. sand act like a mirror. hope I was of some help.
