Arbor I built.

I just built this arbor today, and was curious if anyone knows of a vine that would look good on it, but not smother it! I was thinking of just weatherproofing it and not putting a vine on it. Any thoughts?

Very nice! I love working with wood! (no pun intended) As far as vines go, there is not much out there that, when mature, won't smother a house much less an arbor. Try Clematis, climbing Hydrangea, Wysteria, or Trumpet Vine to name a few. Or another option could be Mandevilla. They climb nicely and all you do is cut them down at the end of the year and take them into the house.

maybe even honeysuckle. They are easy to prune, so they won't be a problem as long as the homeowner gives them some attention, second choice clematis.
