that was not a walkbehind, but a shindaiwa stick edger.

If this is Tanakas version of a focus group, here's my opinion.
You can be the biggest OR you can be the best. Just build a unit that's easy to use, durable and does the job better than anyone else.
Cheap always sells.

does not bog down, and can be utilized as another piece of equipment as well

similar to the split boom mechanisms, having a walk behind edger is one of the last things on our list, as it is used so infrequently, it's hard to justify the cost. I'll just spend the extra 5-10 minutes with my Redmax string trimmer sideways, and knock it down, rather than buy another piece. if it could be used for something else, mulch turner, or some other attachment, that may help justify the cost. but at this point, string trimmer does it well enough.

that was light enoug to be picked up easy for cutting nice curves and would double as a stick edger.

I got both stick and walk behind. both have thier place. Walk behind soooo much stronger for cutting a new edge. stick edger soooooo much quicker.

.....that could have the ability to edge from either side of the machine so one would be able to trim in both directions, unlike .....

For example, I have a property that has five blocks of sidewalk and curb. One pass up the sidewalk then one pass down the sidewalk, then deadhead back up the sidewalk to go down the curb. 25% loss of productivity.

one more time :)
.....would not kick back dirt and grass at you better.....

Using the above example, after fifteen blocks of edging my left shoe becomes full of dirt and grass, not to mention the hits to the legs from small rocks :) Shure would be nice to edge wearing short pants in the summer :)
