Is there an extention of some sort that I can put on my 72" deck for cutting closer to ponds etc?

There is a fella on here that sells an 18" extension that has some articulating properties that may fit your needs. Everyone that ever posted anything about the unit was well pleased. The unit is called the Flex-deck, or Flexdeck. I believe it is Brad who is the owner, and people have been happy with his service.
