I need something that is real good at scanning text and 35mm photos to go onto flyers/brochures/newsletters/etc.
What features do I need to look for?

I have an HP OfficeJet model 610. It is one of those do everything so-so models. It prints, scans and faxes. In retrospect I would buy dedicated machines for each job. But, for my level and needs it does OK. Flatbed scanners can be found for pretty cheap. I am sure someone here must have some experience and advice to offer?

I have a HP Scanjet 6200 Pro model that does OK. The scanners have come way down in price since I got this one. It was $400 with a $50 rebate several years ago. For what you want, a $200 one or less would do the job fine.

Ive got a Canon FB 620P flatbed scanner, which was about $100.00 a year ago. I seldom use it since I picked up a digital camera. The scanner does a really good job, it came with Adobe software, which IMHO, leaves a lot to be desired.
I also have a Canon FB620, by the time I got done with the rebates I think it was around $20. Adobe software included and it sucks.(the software that is) The scanner is a 30 bit and does an appreciable job. I really like the HP's but they are a bit pricy.

Get a USB scanner. This is so when not it use, you can just unplug from your computer while the computer is on or plug it in when you need to.The problem with a scanner is it takes up valuble desk space. In case you don't know what USB stands for, it stands for Universal Serial Bus.
All the mid to top of the line scanners are usb capable.
Top of the line brands of scanners in my oppion are Umax, Hewellt Packard. Can't go wrong with either brand.
Myself, I use a Umax 2100u model. I bought mine for $85 a couple of years ago, now see running around $50 at Fry's Electronics.
