Im looking highly now at the Ferris 1000z 27hp kohler engine 61" deck mower. The local dealer wants $6999. I WANT a ROPS kit (Roll Bars) standard on some brands like JD ...and Roller Striping kit on it too, which will be what another $300-400? Tax is $420 in NJ. Im close to 8k then.

I have a little over 1k to put down on the mower and 6k on the financing options available for this mower for the 24mo same as cash financing. I CANT find an MSRP for these mowers. Anyone familiar with Ferris or any high end Scag brand in general? How much can you come down off what a dealer is asking for a mower? Something thats $6999 im not about to spend $6999 on. They quote that they are usually $7,299 but theres a $300 rebate already applied. If the ROPS kit is installed immediately costing say $200 them im already up to $7,600 after tax.

Is it a chance theyll take $7,200 with tax and putting the ROPS kit on it? If i get it close to 7k ill order it today. They also HAVE these in stock so end of the season theyre just getting rid of whats left id assume, only 4 more days for 0% financing for 24months so i know they want the sale.

They get the mower normally 30% - 33% below retail. At the very least they get it 25% below retail. You tell me if there is room?

dmc, i wish i knew retail. so possibly if retail is $7,299 and then $300 rebate. If they knock off 10% of the sale thats $700... If they make say minimum 15% on the mower, is that good? I think im happy with that, seems these places dont want to take off $50. My snowblowers retail for $2200ish and i get them for $2060 out the door with 6% sales tax included.

ok ive found online, the Ferris ROPS kit is $617!! damn! anyway, it looks liek the Ferris IS3000z 25hp/61" SUSPENSION mower is $7,030 a company bought one in Kansas for, im not paying $7k for the lower 1000z model non suspension then lol, im more confused now :(

My experience is just like everything else. The guy that moves the most units and has themm in stock sells them the cheapest.

Its like Wally World unfortunately but I cant find a smaller local shop that gives me as good a deal as a large dealer 2 hours away in a different state!

So....thats where I go.

I found out retail is $7,499. ALL 3 somewhat local places say the units normally $7,299 and $300 rebate lol. So 3 places sell the 1000z model for $6,999 as their SALE price. if you take minimum 25% off the sticker of $7,499 assuming the dealer gets 25% off from the factory, then they get the $7,499 mower new for $5,624. Would they not install the ROPS kit that is a $600 option for $7000?

This dealer is already being a pita, they seem really against getting a roll over kit on this thing, its only 3-4 bars installed over the driver behind your head.

They ask me stuff like who has flipped one and why do you need that lol. Other brands come with this standard, theyre saying Ferris cost for a ROPS is $799! Im close to just going to the simplicity dealer and ordering what i was looking at in the first place at this point, its getting way too expensive for what i thought was this awesome machine for a good price.

the ONLY dealer in Deleware, no sales tax, was also $6,995. I cant get over the roll over kit bars are another $700! Ill be upto over $8k for this thing before im done. i dont have 2k to put down :( Dont the Scags come with roll bars too? i mean leaving off a $700 option that JD and scag have puts the mower in a "not so great value" range :realmad:

I just bought a JD 757 for 7400. Im waiting for the three bag unit to come in from Deere but that brings the total up to 9K

Not a killer deal but thats the price.

Deeres come with the roll bars standard.

Interesting...does the same markup apply across the board, say to "lesser" model Z's and w/b's?

An equipment dealer is no different than a car dealer. He has room to wiggle on the price. He is just playing PITA maybe because he is the only dealer in the area. But your price there is the same as here in the mid-west, as the price I have been quoted for that model is $6999, with MSRP being $8399.

online the 1000z msrp is $7499, im looking at the NON suspension model since im trying to keep price lower and the 27hp Kohler is fine not the kawasaki... if your getting the is1000z for 6999 id say thats a great deal.

Ram, Not totally related to mowers but a quick bit about getting prices down. I just bought 2 new saws both STIHL #1 is an MS260 PRO list is $489.95 #2 is an HT 101 Pole Saw the list on that is $599.95. Now my 026 was taken down to $480.00 and the HT 101 was taken down to $588.00. It may not seem like much because after NJ tax it still came to over $1100.00. But look at the list and add those + 0.06% and tell me dealers don't have room.

To be honest I'd tell that dealer to shove that mower up his @$$ and move on. What other dealers are in your area? What other mowers have you looked at besides the 2 you listed?

Good luck and I hope you can find a good deal.

An equipment dealer has no where near the area to give or take on price like a car delaer. The car dealer has all the "extras" to play around with power this and power that, stereo, moon roof, etc.. What's on a mower to haggle over I ask?

the dealer is going to sell that unit for what the market will allow him to sell it for. thats about the going rate here too. if you have cash; he would probably move a couple hundred more. a 27/61 usually sells for 7000 or more regardless of the brand around here.

You have to also figure that the dealer loses 3.25% on that financing that you want to do. I know this because I also sell them.

Seems theyve always PUSHED the incentive to purchase for 0% financing. I offered the most local dealer $6,500 today for the unit that is tagged $6,995 after the 300$ manufactuers rebate from $7,299. Its end of the season and dealers should want to clear out for winter snowthrowers etc. He said the Ferris sales rep comes in tomorrow and he will discuss with him, whatever his plans are with that, if he says I can come in , give him 1k cash and finance just shy under 6k for 24mo. Im gonna pick it up. I "want" this mower asap now since i looked into them so much this last week, but trully i wont need it full time until next season so i can wait. time for big snowblowing time soon :)

It is a nice machine though, i will post high quality pictures of it if i get the thing. I know most go with liquid cooled engines etc, the 27hp kohler command im sure is just fine.

Dealer markup is all about the same. They make more to sell more expensive mowers.

Anyway, remember get a mower that a local dealer can support.

On the other hand, purchase out of state and over the phone to save on sales tax. On which at 6% is $60 per $1000 spent.
My experience is that out of state dealers will give a much better deal because its not like they would be selling a mower to you anyway without a great deal. They are still making money just not as much.

Oh ya, the most important thing. If you want a good deal, you have to pay cash. There is no such thing as 0% financing. Someone is paying the interest and it isn't the manufacturer. They just setup the financing so the dealer pays the interest up front from the commission.

Dealers have a cash price and 0% financing price.

i understand, yet ive been to dealers for other large items, $2k+ and their cash price wasnt any lower b/c they "inventoried" their items or some BS, ive never had luck with any cash prices so for this i wasnt really worried, im only doing it because of the 0% 24 mo financing. The bank eats that up if i pay before 24 months.

If anyone thinks a dealer has 25% gross profit margin in their equipment they don't have a clue about dealer margins. I have been a dealer since 1985 and have watched our margins erode continually for the past 20 years.

The only way a dealer can stay in business is to have a large, steady parts and service business or sell a lot of equipment and offer minimal service like the box stores.

Select the dealer you like and will give you the support you need and stay with that dealer. If you jump around and buy here and there a dealer cannot offer the same level of support he gives his loyal customers.

OK, but I purchased a brand new Wright Stander 52" w/ 23HP Kawasaki last season for $4,100 (cash). Now you tell me what the markup is on that from retail. Yes, I got it at "dealer cost" from a dealer with warranty.

Well a update...I called back the local dealer, yesterday i offered $6500 for the unit marked $6995, they come back and say $6700 after they talked to their sales rep. In nj there is 6% sales tax, i went back today again, and told them i have 1k cash right now and i have the "ferris" financing for the credit card for the other 6k of the mower, Ill offer them $7,000 out the door. They said no way so i left... Im kind of pissed since the mower is $7,299, Ferris offers a $300 instant rebate and now another $100 rebate, comming to $6,899. The dealer knocked $200 off and thats all theyll go? Im not understanding. Anyway, 24 mo same as cash financing is awesome and i cant find scag or any other commercial brands that have a 61" deck and 27hp kohler or briggs for under 7k so Im still probably going to get it, pay $7100, it doesnt have the ROPS kit which is almost $700 more so the machine once i order that later will be $7800, scag is $8800 for the same thing, yet ive seen places in other states with them on sale for $7500... oh well, i like the unit and the place isnt far away.

Do you charge your clients "your cost" to cut their grass? They are in business to make money just like you cut grass to make money.

Don't get in a hurry. Sales is like mowing. Wait unit winter to get a good deal. It is seasonal and everyone still has to pay the bills.

So tell me this, if this place in CT is selling it for $5,999, they MUST get it cheaper than that right? Im assuming theyre not loosing money on this? My dealer insisted theyd loose money at $6500, i paid $6700, they wouldnt take 6600 either, which was 7k with tax. 5 other dealers would not come down from $6,995 either :realmad:
