Your opinion please..............

Please consider and answer the following. Assume the following scenerios are for a small company (2-3 employees tops) and the question applies towards the skill level of the owner. Also please assume the LCO performs all needed lawn maintenance to properties (mowing, fertilizing, leaf clean-ups, weed prevention, shrub trimming, overseeding, etc. NO LANDSCAPING).

How helpful would you consider a horticulture degree to be in lawn service industry?

How helpful would a wealth of horticultural knowledge (book smarts/ experience, no degree) be in the lawn service industry?

How successful would an owner be with very little to no knowledge of horticulture be in this industry?

Im just curious. The skill level in this industry varies greatly. I wont answer my question......at least yet. :)

More knowledge is always good, but a degree is not needed unless the LCO wants to step up and take on more plant related work. Hard work and a plan can lead to success. Courses in turf management or a degree in the same (usually reserved for those in the golf industry) would benefit any LCO looking to be more professional and self reliant.

You can read a lot in books, but practical experience makes it truly understandable. This knowledge can potentially take you farther and make your work easier. Many colleges offer professional education courses in the winter, just for professionals looking to further their knowledge, business and to make industry contacts.

You can have success, but it will most likely be harder without the knowledge. The information gained on the street is not always the most accurate or helpful. It all depends on how far you want to take your business or in which direction you wish to go. The better educated you are about the subject you wish to pursue, the better equipped you will be to be, to be successful at it.
