Lawn Boy Self-Propelled

Guys,

Here is the problem I am having with my self-propelled lawnboy (variable speed, model # 10324):
I shut the mower off the other day to do some trimming and when I started it back up to go to the street, the self-propelled would not work. I came home, checked the belt and it is intact. If I squeeze the handle the pulley that I can see is not moving at all. I am able to move the belt with my hand w/o any problems, but cannot figure out why the self-propelled won't work :help: . If you need any more info, let me know.

Im sure restrorob will chime in soon, but, it sounds like the wire that connects to the self propelled handle is snapped.

Ditto on the cable, Sounds like it just gave up the ship at that moment.

I don't think it's the cable because I checked it the whole way from the handle down to the pulley. Unless there is another cable you're talking about, I'm positive the main one is still intact. Is there something in the transmission that would do this? Or do I have to replace the whole transmission?

It's a 10324 model, the Silver Series, and it is variable speed self-propelled. Let me know if you need more info.

Sorry Zach, But I need the serial number also. It's been quite a while since I worked on one of these and there are seven 10324's listed, I looked at three and didn't see what you described under yours.

Pull the rear wheels, start and engage SP and note whether or not the souput shaft(drive shaft) is turning. Grasp the drive shaft with a rag if it is truning and see if it continures to turn against pressure. If it turns against pressure the problem lies with the drive shaft components(clutch washer, friction washer, thrust washers and e-clips--replace all except drive key and spring unless worn). If shaft does not turn against pressure, you have two possibilities, either the input and/or output bevel gears inside the transmission are worn or the roll pin connecting the output bevel gear to the output shaft is sheared. If the bevel gears are worn, replace both and this can be done without removing the transmission after removing the gear cluster. To do this you must remove the shift lever then note the orientation of the gear cluster.

If the roll pin is sheared it is best to remove transmission to replace.

While transmission is apart check shift keys in the gear cluster as well as for worn shaft bushings on both sides of the transmission shaft.

You can not tell just by looking at the cable assembly. The cable goes inside a casing. It will break inside the casing and you will not see it from the out side. Pull the handle back and watch the cable at the top where it goes it and then at bottom where it comes out. I just got into it with a customer friday about a broke cable on a MTD push mower. The cable was broke but because he could not see though the casing he kept saying it was not broke and I was just trying to sell him something he did not need. I go so mad at him I just walked off. Customers like that I wished not to come back to tell the truth

I hope. I just had some flashbacks when I read the post. That fool and his MTD mower. That fool thought the outside casing of the cable was the cable. What got me mad at him was the fact he called me a lair and said I was trying to get him to buy a cable he did not need. I guess I kind of let my sork spill over into Lawnsite, sorry about that.

I also checked the cable and as far as I can tell, it is working fine. On a funny note, I didn't realize how much I missed my self-propelled until I had to do one of my bigger yards with a push mower. Thanks for all the help so far.

Ok Zach, I done some checking and found they put several different style drive systems in your type unit. Not knowing which you have all I can tell you is take the plastic cover off the back of the deck. (held with one screw) This will expose the belt and trans. pulley. Start it up and make sure the pulley is spinning while engauged. If it does then it looks like either a axle key problem or internal trans. problem. Here is a link to down-load a drive system service manual which will explain everything. If you have any questions about anything in the manual post the page number for I have it on file already and will help all I can.
