:help: Hey Guys need a little help here

I have an old 12.5 HP electric start. It's a good running old thing but I am tired of messing around with the battery. Is it possible
(without too much "ouch") to convert this same motor to a pull type?

Thanks for any help you can send my way

Joe

Whats wrong with the battery? Does it keep going dead or something? If so, you have a bad charging coil, replace that and keep the electric start is what I would do :cool2:

You hit the nail on the head / battery keeps discharging. Is there a way to check the coil?

Thanks

Well Joe, There is a test that can be performed on the stator, But there is seven different stators that could be on your engine. First we have to identify which you have. First post the model and type numbers off the engine. Some units have two double connectors along side the starter If yours does the easiest way to identify which goes to the stator if you can't tell by looking is by removing the starter and you can see which wires are coming from under the flywheel. I need the wire color and the connector color some have one wire some have two wires. Then the proper test can be outlined.

:help: The engine model#286706 Type# 0441-01 It also has a
code #930120D 12.5 IC Gold and the model # 917.255440

If you still need me to find the wires let me know and I will do it first thing in the AM.

Thanks

Good Morning -Rob

OK here goes-- coming from the harness is a red & orange wire to a white connector then a red and black wire goes to engine/flywheel. The red wire is on the same side of connector going in and coming out. Am I on the right path?

Just want to make sure we are on the same page, What color connector are the red and black wires in on the flywheel side ?

Ok Joe, Your gonna need a multimeter to perform this test; Put your Red test meter lead into the 10A receptacle in the meter, Put the Black test lead into the COM receptacle in the meter. Rotate meter selector to DC amps position.
Unplug the white connector, Hook your red test lead to the Red wire In the connector and hook your Black test lead to the positive battery post. Start the engine and run at full throttle then read the amperage out put.
A good stator will put out 2 to 4 amps, If you don't get this then the stator is bad and needs replacing. If you do have the above amperage post back and will go to the next step. Make sure the battery is fully charged before performing any test.

Hey -Rob

I think you nailed this one, the stator is fighting to put one amp out. will have to get a new one.

Thanks and sure do appreciate your help
