1992 Ford f-250 diesel. The truck is not getting a charge as it drives. The amp light is on and it sticks to about 10 amps which is the same as when I put the key forward to start it. I replaced alternator, batteries are pretty new, checked the grounds, all to no avail. What else do I check before I bring it to the shop to get fixed?

The first thing I would do is take the truck to a auto parts chain store, Most of them will check your charging system for free. Least that way you would know if you have a defective alternator. I got a bad one from Napa not too long ago.

I have had a lot of problems with Advance Auto reman parts, especially alternators. Currently i'm on alternator #3 in about 6 months for my F-350. The next one will be a Motorcraft or Napa. Something else I would look at is the glow plug relay.

I wouldn't buy a shop rag from any discount auto parts place. It is worth the extra money to get the real thing either OEM or from a quality aftermarket supplier.

Have you checked the starter relay? Sometimes this will drain a battery during operation.

The gauge reads volts not amps. That would be 10 volts it is reading.
Some fords had their voltage regulator built into the ignition module. Not sure how it would apply to the diesel, sorry.

I'm not sure where the GP relay is on a 92. On the 94-97 PSD it's to the left of the fuel filter just off center of the engine bay. It looks just like a starter relay.

Go over to www.thedieselstop.com and ask there. Registration is free, and there are 7.3L IDI gurus and experts there that will probably be of more help than any of us here.
