Trapping them is the only way.

the only reason i can think of is that the moles are feeding on a few grubs. that may be the case. but they way you describe it, tells another story. moles feed on grubs and dont usually hang out where they arent.

Actually, earthworms are one of the main things that moles eat, along with grubs. I've really researched the subject, because I have a horrible mole problem. You can eliminate grubs from your yard and still have a bad mole problem, because the worms are still there.

Ok, I know I'm late getting to this one, but hopefully I can still help.
JStockton was right to recommend Talpirid. As far as chemicals go, Talpirid is the only chemical on the market actually labeled and proven to consistently kill moles. It's relatively cheap (40-ish for a box of 20 baits) and it works great. I make my living selling products to the professional lawn care industry and I can personally vouch for the efficacy of this product.
(Just remember to follow the detailed instructions or it may not work for you...)
If you call your local LESCO they can hook you up. If you don't live close to one, they can simply UPS it to you. Just call them with a CC number and you'll be all set.
Best of luck!

Drop some chewed bubble gum into a hole and wait a week to see what happens

Bubble gum doesn't work, neither does moth balls, gas, pellets, or anything like that. I had a cat who had a great time digging up the lawn and eating the moles, but, like I said, she dug up 1/2 the lawn getting them. Talpirid is the only product out there that works. Follow the instructions, and it will kill the moles. And having moles definitely does NOT mean you have grubs. Their primary food source is earthworms, which is why Talpirid is in the shape of worms. Call your local Lesco, $45 including tax, it's well worth it.

Why not kaput gel ? It will kill them as they groom themselves .

Re you sure they are moles, and not voles? Voles are still very active and will create tunnels between the snow and soil and do a lot more damage to plants and turf than moles.

Neither Kaput mole gel or Juicy fruit will kill the mole. Scimetrics has marketed their Kaput mole gel as "controlling" moles for a long time, but the only ones who have ever successfully kept a mole alive in captivity for long enough to prove that a particular product can kill it, is Bell Labs (the makers of Talpirid). The problem with the Kaput gel is that the AI is warfarin. Warfarin is an anticoagulant that is somewhat effective against rodents. However, moles are not technically rodents, and warfarin has not been shown in controlled lab conditions to kill moles.
Stick with the stuff that works.
PS--why would a mole eat juicy fruit?? lol. If the food doesn't mimic its natural food source, you can't expect it to work that well as a bait...you might be right that they can't digest it, but again, if the mole rejects the bait, it's useless.

Worms are a moles main diet along with a host of other insects, not just grubs. I have not tried the new chemical Talpirid but have had great success with Nash's Choker Loop Trap. It usually gets them within 24 hrs if you are on one of the main runs. Look for a fairly straight run step down on a small portion (3"-4") of a run if it is popped up in 24 hrs it is likely a main run and is where a trap should be set up. Incidentally I have never had any luck with the spear type traps.
