I replaced the kohler with a new 20hp kohler and the engine will only start if i touch the solenoid with a screwdriver to jump the soleniod. But im not getting and volts through my solenoid to show that its bad. I tried a new wiring harness a differnt key switch and nothing is working. Im getting power right up to the hot wire on the starter. I hope to god its not the sloeniod or i will send this baby back and get a kawi. SO it starts but only when i jump the starter solenoid. The service guys at the dealer told me to touch the small jumper cable on the lonoid with a tester and turn the key and if i get power then its bad. But i did not and so im guessing the solenoid is still good. I just dont know.

Try putting the starter off the old engine on it. If it works, send the starter off the new one back and tell them it's no good.

Ok replaced the starter and still nothing. Im going to call dixie tommorow cause kohler could care less. They just lead me to a dealer who knows too little about whats going on with them. Figures they would lead customers away considering the quality of their engines. Where is the customer support for the 1380 dollars i spent. lol

I thought that old starter turned the other engine over before you switched engines. It has to be something simple.

Yes the old starter did turn and now nothing is happening. I don tknow what it is. Maybe this engine is differnt in some way than the other. I wish kohler would make it easier. I will call dixie tommorow. Thanks for the help.

If it starts when you jump the selinoid, it really sounds like the selinoid is shot. Hate to give you bad news.

Have u tried buying a manuel starter switch. can get them for about $3 at a auto parts store, the problem could be in the switch.

is that all i need to get this thing going. I mean that sounds about right but i just dont want to do any internal damage to the soleniod or anything. Plu si dont feel like going through all of the wiring. I did try the other key switch of the other dixie and it did not help.

All you need to do is a little diagnostic work to fix this. There are logical steps to take to find the problem.

You need to make two 3 foot test jumper leads (wires with alligator clips on both ends) first.

Make sure the key is OFF.

Take one lead and attach one end to the + terminal of the battery. Touch the other end on the small blade that is sticking out of the starter solenoid right next to the battery cable attachment bolt. If the starter runs when you do this then the solenoid and starter are good.

Next pull the wiring harness off of the key switch. Take one lead and attach it to the + terminal of the battery. Attach the other end to the #2 blade on the starter switch. Take the second wire and attach it to the #3 blade on the starter switch. Attach the other end to the small blade on the starter solenoid. Using the key on the switch see if the starter runs. If it does then the switch is also good.

Now, get a volt meter and check the black wire at the wiring harness that you pulled off of the starter switch. If there is 12+ volts present then the switch is getting power.

There is only one thing left. There is a blue wire that comes out of the wiring harness on the back of the switch. Check and make sure that it is attached to the blade sticking out of the starter solenoid.

If all of this checks out then the starter system should be working.

Thanks for the replys. It was the fuse that was missing! I had to take it off the old mower and i didnt even know it was a fuse because my employee took the fuse out when it blew and wired it with a straight wire so it was in camoflauge sort of speak. Thanks for the help.
