As an experiment I am working on building a skid loader from a dissasembled M-700 Bobcat, and fitting it with remote controls as well as eventually experimenting with computer control. So far I have only used older machines like the M-610 that I have, which is not hydrostatic drive. What I am wondering is if anyone has used both types of machines, and has noticed any differences in their performance. This is just for experimentation, so I am not in any hurry. I have been running a robotic lawnmower for 10 years to mow my lawn with very few glitches, the bobcat should not be too difficult to control, especially if I get the correct feel of the machine.

Someone I know recommended that I could work as an operator for a few days to get more familiar with common jobs skid steers are used for. Is this a possibility or is it just rare that skid steers are needed? Any ideas are appreciated. I still have my M-610 but from what I see the hydrostatic machines used now are a lot more responsive.
