What are some problems and/or solutions you have when it comes to DOG CRAP in the lawn. We have customers that need reminding every year, yet it still goes on and now we just write a nice letter and terminate service for repeat offenders.
What are some of your dog crap stories and their results?
Thanks for your reply.

Most are decent enough to pick it up, i mean occasionally you are going to hit some. Nevertheless its really awful when stuck to your boots or to the tires.

I hire a contractor to pick it up and add it to the bill, tell they pick it up or you will and bill them. I also wash it off at their house if I step in or drive through it. My guy charges $5.00 a week for clean-up.

There is a post on this, goes something like "Who, who, who let the dogs out!!"
There were plenty of replies to that post.

I had a problem with this guy at some apartments I cut. Every week we would run through this crap. Finally he came out and started complaning about us not trimming around his junk car. So I made him a deal and told him I would do the trimming if he would clean up his dog crap every week. So we did the trimming that week, next week we came back and there was more there than before. The apartment owner said that she had alot of problems out of him before, and said to do whatever I thought would be appropiate to fix this problem. So the next week the night before we mowed we went over and shoveled up every bit of crap and placed it neatly directly in front of his back door and right in front of the drivers side door. After this he never said a word and there was no more crap to wade through. I guess he relized what we went through every week.

I must be as lazy as some of those people you guys are talking about because the customers that dont care to pick it up then I just dont care either...I will run over as it doesnt stick in my tires on the Z cause I have low ground pressure bars so the doodoo just oozesot the side and when I trim I just watch where I walk.....These are not 500,000.00 homes so If they dont mind brown spots....So be it...They are happy to have their yard mowed and they pay more regular than some of those that have the megga homes that I that I do pick up doodoo at.
Peace!

I did read the last post regards the animal POOP and in that one and this one nobody seems to address the fact that the customer may not be at fault.
We have a few customers in a nice neighborhood that seem to always have 2 to 4 nice little piles of this stuff each week.
We know for a fact that the customer does not have a pet and have actually seen the neighbors come by walking theirs. Can only assume that these are the ones responsible.
I'm not going to penalize a customer (especially elderly) that treats me with respect and always pays their bill on time.

Just to clarify, these are dogs that belong to the property we were mowing. The waste was in the back lawn area in excessive amounts. I do agree that crap in the front lawn is ok to certain amount (2-3 piles) and that the customer can not be held responsible if they own no pets or “that their havane don’t match my puppy’s poo” in that case we just mow on.
Thanks for your answers.

I will normally let the customer know If I come to mow and the yard is got piles I will not mow through it or around it, I will simply charge them an extra 10-15 dollars a week on top of there normal charge to shovel it up. Most of the time after they get the first bill I normally wont see the piles anymore, But there are some that would rather pay the fee.
Nothing is worse than not seeing it and weedwacking it and have it spray all over your face!!! Yumm!!''

I know what you mean about the piles coming from other people walking their dogs.
I mow next to a guy who had the same problem. He fixed it by putting a sign in the ground out at the front of his front yard.
It was in the shape of a tombstone & read: "Here lies the last dog who pooped in my yard". That seemed to cure the problem :)

I mow around the piles. The message is clear to the owner, if there is a pile, the grass won't be cut at that spot. Usually, the message gets across, without any confrontation, added costs, etc. Yea - I know the skill to find the piles before hitting them isn't a very marketable skill, but sure beats the smell from your shoes or wheels that seems to last, and last, and last ....
I know customers in this area who have immediately dropped a contractor when something was added to the bill.
I agree about the problem sometimes being created by dogs not owned by the customer. Those cases are near the street. But, there is no question who is responsible when the piles are in other parts of the yard.

Now if the darn dogs would just learn to spread it out we wouldn't need to apply so much fertilizer would we?

My worst problem last year was not dog crap in the yard, but it was a patio that the owner would tie up his dog which was the size of a cow. Unfortunately the dog crap was also the size of a cow's. After weeks and weeks of crap not being cleaned up the whole area really reeked. I have a pretty weak stomach when it comes to bad smells. So this patio actually made me heave(puke) a couple different times. I finally had pull my shirt over my nose and hold my breath as I blew clippings from the patio. I'm not saying I smell the best after sweating for 10 hours, but it sure beats the sewer system that patio turned into.

Ingredients:
Numerous dog piles in yard to be mowed (not for first time though)
1 mower, any size, make or model
1 (or more) aggravated mower jockey
1 small shovel
Before running over a couple of piles, scoop up with shovel, and set aside for later use. Mow yard (trying to avoid piles, but always hitting at least 1, urk!) After finishing mowing, just before driving mower down the middle of the driveway, smear reserve from shovel onto tread area of tire, and proceed to trailer. Repeat weekly as necessary. Switch to front walk if no improvement in 3 weeks.
No gaurantee of results, but vengeance is gauranteed.

Yeah .. I know someone said this, but my favorite thing in the world is having dog poop splatter on my face and arms when I'm whipping ... Oh yeah .. I'm just kidding ... This happens to me 1 - 2 times a month. Soon as I smell the smell, it makes my gag reflex go into overdrive ... and if I step in it, I wipe it on an object in the customers yard (like the steps of their deck or something) ... these people are living in 500k+ houses, have pets but simply cannot (HIRE SOMEONE TO) clean up after them ... sometimes I really feel like dropping my drawers and laying a big steamer on their front porch on a cold fall/spring morning.

Even though it may not be the fault of the elderly, the number's of the elderly is so slim that it should not out weigh the homeowner's who are disrespectful and not concerned with the wellfare of the LCO. If they are too lazy to check for feces the night before we are expected to be there then I tack on an extra payment for my time including the washing of the machines.

Man,it will sling off in the next yard a little doodoo has never killed anyone, I just run over it and keep going. I can't believe some people charge to pick it up. what is the going rate? 1.00 per pile. With the scags wide tires it will just mash it into the ground, or get caught in the tread and sling it off else where. I may be mistaken, you all that are complaining might be dealing with big dogs, you know-human doodoo size piles, but come on, how much of a pile can a poodle leave?
