View Full Version : Bid help needed about moving/spreading gravel.

I recieved a call and went to look at a property. The fellow needs approximately 8-10 yards of gravel moved from the front of his house to the back of his house. And then a seperate price for spreading it around underneath a deck and making the whole pad 3" thick. The deck at connection of house is about 2 ft. tall and then coming down the slope to the end of the deck is approximately 6 ft. tall. I am imagining some 5gallon pail moving for the 2 ft. section. I'm guessing the deck is about 20 ft. wide. It will have to be done by wheelbarrow and shovel unless my loving mother will let me borrow the lil' kubota with front bucket. Help here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Also, I'm guessing the distance from point A to point B being 100 ft. One more thing, he said it took him and his wife about 8 hrs each to do the same amount, and that by wheelbarrow and shovel.

Do not bid this by the hour bid it by the yard and material.Useing a big capacity wheelbarrrow(two wheeler)to move it.You can't really separate the prices because moving it and dumping it is like part of spreading it.Otherwize what I am saying is if your gonna spread it your gonna dump it differently than if your just leaving it in big big plies. So really moving it to the back is part of spreading it,because your going to dump it starting at the outside edges and working in like this 1wheelbarrow full

like this,so I would charge 50 to 65 a yard to move it and spread it
The top example is move and spread..the bottom is just dump

Thank you for the info sheshovel. I will keep that in mind for future purposes. I didn't get the job. I quoted him $700.00, he thought was high. Still trying I suggested $600.00. still no-go. He suggested $300.00, I said no-go :)

8 yards would have been 400.00 at $50 a yard and that would have been the lowest .
Don't feel bad the guy can do it himself then,If he does not think it's that much work. You don't need to do the slave work for people who don't want to pay a decient wage for it.That's why he was trying to get you to bid it by the hour in the first place and suggested him and his wife had done it before in so many hours. So he lost out you did not.BUT in your negotiations you could have tried $550.00 as your last offer and that might have sold him.

4 to 500
My rate for spreading gravel or a regravel for 3/4 inch blue stone is $ 50 ton installed. with 3 ton min
My rate for wheel barrow price is $70.00 a ton! installed including gravel.
If it is under the deck, mostly a low 3 foot deck its more.

You will need a bobcat / dingo to move and spread the stone or you will be there all day!!!!
Rent the right tool for the job and save you time and make more money.
