I am looking into starting my first year of operation next year in the business. I was wondering if I could get a quick heads up on what the main surprises that one faces besides building a client list.

Your costs! You will hear people on the forum stating that you need to know your costs. Once I started figuring my costs, it was a surprise how much they were. Figure out how much it costs you just to arrive at the site. Make sure that you bid appropriately.
