Ok heres what the lady wants
1) sunken flagstoen removed
2)A walkway dug out and stone put in (305 sq ft. total area)
3) Flagstone walking steps put in

Questions
1) What kind of rock would look good under the flagstone
2) How deep to lay the rock
3) Should modified stone be put under this to prevent sinking

You could use a crusher run base or I've used 4 inches of stone dust tamp- lay in flag and dust the joints.

ok final question that i need answered....do i need a base or can i just lay the stone that i want down

Oh you can do whatever you want to do,But to do a proper job and to keep the stones from sinking again
and to do it correctly a good base is needed .

Proper compaction of both the soil subgrade & base is just as important as materials. Stone dust, not sure what that is as there is nothing in my area that is called that speicific name. These things vary around the country. My assumption is that there will be way too many fines in the "stone dust",and if used will lead to failure.
