I'm just getting started and I want to take this time of year to build my equipment. Right now I'm looking at used trucks and have come across a
1991 Chevy 2500 with a dump insert. I took my mechanic buddy with me to look at the truck and he thinks it might be good to start with. He said it is built well and Chevy's are inexpensive to work on. It has 106,000 miles on it and the body isn't the greatest but I can paint it and the dump really interest me. The seller wants $7500.00 but I'm thinking of offering $5500.00 cash.
I can only afford to spend $6000.00 cash on a truck.

My questions are:

Do I need a dump insert now?
Can I go with an F150 or something similar?
Does getting this older truck distract from my business?
Do I need an extended cab or crew cab?
Do I need a 4x4?


Please Help!

Is there any pics of the truck. Thats not a bad truck to start with. The dump insert is just nice to have, instead of shoveling the grass clipping outs of the bed and whatever might be in there. Stick with chevy/gmc they never treat us wrong. 4X4 is nice to have if you plow snow, not totally necessary for just hauling. But its nice to have if you get stuck in wet grass, mud, etc. The extended cab, only if your running a crew bigger than 4 or more. And the apperience of the truck doesn't rele matter if you do good work. If you think so just use some bondo and body putty and get it painted.

$7500 is way too much atruck like that is only worth about $3500 it needs a paint job, has over 100,000 miles. Im not saying it's a bad truck, it's probably a great truck just not for $7500. For that kind of money you could probaly get a 96 or 97 2500. Ive even seen 98-99 1500 base models for $7,000-8,000
PLEASE DON'T PAY MORE THAN $3500 FOR THAT TRUCK

well fpr 1 i think $7500 is a little to much for a 91 my dad got a 94 for that price and if u get a half ton go with a 1500 chevy and 4x4 is good but only get it if u need it but get it if u r snowplowing

Just getting started.............

You don't want to spend that much on that particular truck.
You don't need a dump insert but they are nice to have .....Sometimes.
You don't "need" 4 wheel drive to cut grass.
You don't need an 18 foot trailer.
You don't need a crew cab until you actually have a "crew" (meaning more than just one or two helpers.)
A half ton truck can get you started, but I'm not sure I'd do too much hauling with a half ton and a 16 foot trailer, a smaller trailer, yes.

Can I go with an F150 or something similar? No, If you are serious about this business venture then get a 3/4 or 1 ton. You will wear out a 1/2 ton faster than you can blink pulling a loaded equipment trailer or hauling mulch, topsoil or anything else heavy. I'm not saying it can't be done but the brakes, axles, springs and trans of the 3/4 or 1 tonwill take the rigors of being a service truck much better.

Does getting this older truck distract from my business? Yes and No. Yes, if it's an ugly beater. Yes if it brakes down all the time, in turn distracting you from your business. No, if the truck is clean and well maintained.

Do I need an extended cab or crew cab? Tough question. How many people will be riding in the truck? This one is all about personal preference to me.

Do I need a 4x4? I use it often at the mulch/topsoil yard. That place turns into a swamp after a good rain. I sometimes use 4wd in the snow. If your just cutting grass then you don't need 4wd.


7500 is a lot for a 91.

I would stick with a 3/4 ton or a srw 1 ton for a work P/U you want a 3/4 ton with a 8600lb gvw not the light duty 3/4 ton. You also want a 4x4 you may not think you would use it much but you will.

Keep searching for a truck you will find one for a better price I wouldn't pay 7500 dollars for a 91.

Sounds like way too much money for a 91. My dad just got rid of a 99 F250 powerstroke ext cab with 150k for like $9000. The body was pretty beat up but an excellent work truck truck. I really wouldn't run a truck that's more than 10 yrs old unless I owned it since new and know the issues with it. I wouldn't worry too much about the dump insert, you can always buy one later when you have a little extra money. Check out autotrader.com, that's where I've found my last 2 trucks.

1999 Ford F250 gasser mileage not listed $6000
1999 Dodge 2500 gas 167k mi $3800
1999 Ford F250 gas 4x4 ext cab 130k mi $6000
1999 Chevy 2500 gas 100k mi $6700
2001 Chevy 2500 gas 133k mi $7000
1999 Chevy 2500 ext cab gas 150k mi $7500

The reason so many 99s are there is because I did a search with a max price of 7500 with no trucks older than 99. I'm sure you could find some really low mileage 95-96 models for around $6000. Do youself a favor and stay away from that truck that is almost 15yrs old, unless he wants to give it to you for nothing. This spring I bought my truck on autotrader for $22k out the door and could probable still sell it now for around $26k.:)

I would also say no more than $3500 or $4000, but the dump insert adds some value, at least $1000 if it works well. Today was the first day I used mine in my new 2500hd, and it's going to be really nice to have.:cool:

I just want to say thank you to everyone that gave me advice on purchasing my first truck on a limited budget.

I took the feedback into account while making my decision.

I stayed away from the 1991 Chevy2500 (old heavy duty model with dump insert).

Instead, I came across a 1998 Ford F-250 long bed 2x4 with 35,000 original miles on it.

The seller wanted 8995 but I gave him 8000. The NADA and KBB are higher.
I spent a little more than planned but it looks and runs like a brand new truck. It's a 3/4 ton, not a Super Duty but I think for a first truck, I should do good.

I still have my eye on a HD or SD later on with a dump insert. I just think it would come in handy.

Oh, by the way. The guy I bought the truck from wants me to reseed his entire backyard. Not bad for my first truck deal HUH?

but I offered $8000.00. The NADA and KBB are both higher than 8.

It's considered a "light duty" 3/4 ton. But for a starter I think I'm good to go!

By the way, the guy selling the Chevy 2500 is a shyster! Go Figure!

I'm still looking at a HD/SD p/u with dump insert down the road.

I'm probably going with a 1998 Ford F-250 2x4 long bed 4.6L Triton with 35,000 original miles on it! The sale price will be lower than NADA and KBB!

I'm still interested in a HD/SD with dump insert later on.
