I grease our trimmer head gears each month. After talking with some other owners, they say,"Grease my Trimmer"? I realize it depends on if your part time or full time how often you grease, but pull that plug out and pump them full. I just wanted you all to be aware they need grease. If you didn't know about this before, you do now.
----------
Eric@ELM
Eric, you reckon that might be why mine is making a whining noise? Sounds like it has a Pete Jackson gear drive in it!
Homer

Homer,
I reckon that your trimmer has the "noisy" Pete drive opposed to the "quiet" gear drive. :) They actually make a quieter gear drive now.

How do you grease a shidaiwa?

You take out the plug in the gear box with a 1/2" wrench and hold the end of the grease gun over the hole real tight and start pumping till it won't hold anymore.
----------
Eric@ELM
what type of grease do you use? Do you use the same stuff as on mowers?

Yes, I use the same, a high temperature grease. It will be fine.
----------
Eric@ELM
You do not just pump grease into the gear case. Where the heck do you all think it goes. The correct way and the only way to grease a trimmer gearcase is to remove the head and any spacer around the output shaft and add grease either thru a zerk or through a lube port and add grease until the new grease comes out around the output shaft. This changes the grease and using any other procedure forces grease up around the drive shaft or cable and will damage the bushings and I have known of so much grease being forced in that it went all the way to the clutch.
