View Full Version : Cutting down a tree
I got a job today to cut down a 30 foot tree. It has about a 24" stump. It's not near anything. How much would you charge to cut it down and haul it away?
That seems like a big stump for a 30' tree. My guess would be around $125 - $175. Not including grinding the stump.
That's just a guess on the size of the tree.

What kind of tree? I would charge $150-$200 just to take it down plus dump fee's, plus the stump grinding. My price would be around $350.

I had a tree about the same size in my front yard and had quotes for around $1200. It was by some wires tho.
I eventually had it cut down by a contractor who cut 16 trees at my neighbor's house, and he did it for only $300. He did tell me he was getting spanked on his estimate for the total job. I don't know what he charged my neighbor, tho.

What kind of tree is it? Hickory is vicious on chainsaw blades. Take into account how hard the wood is when placing your bid.

i would say if it is just a stick and you can drop it... which it most likely is for a 2' dbh 30' tree... unless it is a tree that has been topped... heaven forbid. but if it can just be dropped- lets say um 250 to cut it down and haul away the wood. then go and take the wood and split it and sell it. for the stump? maybe 100 to grind? 4$ per inch. and the tree itself - 100 per hour to cut down and chip and 150 per dump truck load of wood you have to take out. 50 per pickup truck, plus time to haul at a lower rate.
thanks for the ideas on price. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is. I think it may be some sort of fruit tree.
As simple as it sounds.60 dollars gets it down and cut up.
As for hauling it,depends on what kind of wood.In other words can I USE IT.

Hey AWM! For that price...get your bags packed! I'll pay your airfare to the Philadelphia...I've got about 15 in my backyard I want cut down. ;)
Cut down 3 (60'+) last Saturday and cut into logs for splitting to use as heat next winter...no way Jose on the $60. Took me all day and now I have to split it! Estimate I got for cutting same trees was $175/tree on up to $275 when they got close to house.

ther are many things to look at, location(is close to a house, garage) power wires, are ther permanent fixtures in the lawn, plus make sure you sign a contract for services this will protect you! we have been in the full service tree business for 7 years and ive seen small trees turn into 2 days of work becuase the customer wants to get difficult. i would charge no less than $500. he can get done cheaper, but its not worth the possible headache! make sure your insurance is up to date too! the tree bus is good but it can get ugly if your not prepared, plus you can loose you but in it too!
But his post descibed a situation that would take
1/2 hr to cut up.NO POWER LINES,NO OTHER TREES
JUST 30 FT AND CUT UP 60 DOLLARS Thats not the job you described at all at your places.Like I said haul off depends on whether I can use the would. Not bragging but I
DO know this type work and know what it takes.Read the original post. This is not a biggee

i know its not a biggie, if it was wed be talking thousands!
im just giving him my advice from my area. we does these 30-50 footers all the time we have a min of $500 with a signed contract that we are not liable for turf damage, we do 3-4 a week and have only been turned down twice! so maybe its mt area but thats what we charge

And by charging $60 you are becoming one of those lowering the bar. Why can't you see that AWM? I don't care if it took 20 minutes. That's okay...keep giving your services away...you'll see.

again it's all about Location .....it's cheaper down here ...I'm not in NC ...but I've been thru there and I've been thru Penn .....it just does not cost the same to live in the South ....but I do know it's expensive to live in Canada ...so the price has to be more than $60.00
I may not charge $60 but I'd be close ...that is an easy deal ...but for as single job and not a regular customer ... I just would not do it ....but's that just me ...my main income is from cutting grass & property maintanence ...not tree's
what I'd do is look at what the going rate is and charge what you need to make for your time ... related to your area to make a living
I read sooooo many post asking how much this ...how much that ....it all has to do with what it cost to live in your area

I live in Fla. too and I'd charge around $150 to cut it down and $150 to haul it off. Chainsaw work is DANGEROUS and anything less than this amount your screwing yourself and everyone else in the business. Russ
Mabe Im missing something. He said a 30 ft tree
Out clear of every thing.Im picturing a 30 ft
with several branches angling off.
Now I notch it ,cut to the hinge. It falls
and 20 min later its cut up.
Mabe this aint the tree I think it is.
Now say I can use the wood. Not much so instead of
another 60 to clean it up 45.So Igot some fire wood
to sale, and 105 in my pocket.Whole thing a little over an hr. Thats allowing for a little trouble or something slow down.
Think mabe you guys pictureing a different tree than I am.In any case you chg what you gotta have and me to.
Not working low I dont think. You may not do this.
But I really do know people who have paid this much(500)
FOR THE WORK I described.Thats just hurting the whole buisiness in my opinion. LUCK TO YALL

Not to mention does your insurance cover this type of work? Ditto on the hazardous aspect!
Cutting a single tree down like that ,I dont consider
that dangerouse.Half down and or in some other trees
now you talking heads up work.Ive hadum jump 6-8ft
out.HARD TO KNOW WHAT TO DO.on those I MIGHT TAKE AN HOUR BEFORE i even pick up a saw.

ok, the tree you described....250-300, he said 24" at the base, this means the tree has been topped, is just a very odd tree! or has had damage, either way your still dealing with sizable meat alteast up to 12-13ft, then branchin of into 8-9" limbs, i sit firm on the 500. today i dropped 2 trees for one of my good friends, all i had to do is drop them into a corn field and leave 250.00 and he was happy! he actually just left my house and read this post while he was here! he still 6thinks he got away cheap, maybe my market is that good? i dunno but thats also what my competion would charge(500) im in now way knocking you ADM but maybe you could get more? thats what we get and get it all the time! we will also meet any price givin by our competion, yet we dont hardly loose to our comp! maybe i should raise mine?
Sounds like you got it going. My neighbor a mile dn the rd will cut anyones tree for the wood.To be honest the man was cuttin when I was doing yellow. And I believe he might still out work me and that (hard work) is suppose to be my thing
I LIVE IN A WHAT IS STILL CALLED THE COUNTRY.
.But Charlotte is headed this way as hard as it can
