View Full Version : Thinking about a hustler

I went to a dealer in the are we might move to and I wanted a jd but the guy said to get a ztr. He sells hustler and I liked the big 52" fast track w/ honda. It was on sale and looked like a good deal. But what advantages does the hustler z have over the ft? And which one would be better for my business and my own lawn? I have a real small lawn business but want to expand it and cut with my dad. Which is better? Help would be appreciated.

For your yard and a few others the FasTrak will be a good choice for you.
It is priced right and is very heavy duty.
The FasTrak's (44" and 52") do come with a 1 year commercial warranty (or 400 hours) if your dealer installs a hour meter when you buy the unit.
Differences between the FasTrak 52" and the Mini Z 52" would be the seat, hydros, tire sizes and a beefier frame on the Mini Z 52".
This is assuming you are looking at a 52" unit.

If you can afford the Min Z I would go with it. I have 44"/16hp honda. I love it! I do wish I would have went with a bigger motor. But for my yard it really rocks! After buying my mower, a buddie of mine wanted to sell me his 52" Min Z. I really wished I could have it. But dont need it. Just my 2cents!

We've spent enough on repairs on our two hustlers to buy a third one in just three years. We mow about five acres of a 78 acre military base and those machines spend more time at the repair shop than on the lawns. My 2 cents

I know a guy that cuts 56 yards a week with a 20/52 fastrak. The only work we have done on it is the engine solenoid, besides regular maintance Got a 52 inch mini Z with 615 Hrs in one year. Replaced the soleniod also and a drive belt. This guy just bought a Super Mini Z 52". Which I believe is the best mower in its class bar none. Never known Hustler to have a problem and not solve it soon and promptly.

I agree. I don't have a ton of hours, but I had an odd paint problem on just my deck that Hustler didn't even blink at. This machine was built just before they started the new paint system they have in place now. They just replaced the entire deck. In fact it's the newer style deck too with the larger cutout. Hustler has a solid simple product in my mind.

I have a 60" hustler super Z with a kawi and its great for my business. I've had no problems with it except some jerk sold me the wrong belts once and after I got the right belt its fine. The only problem I have now with it is I think there is air in one of the hydros after I changed the oil in it. I'm gonna put it in the shop for a total inspection once I find either a 36" toro or exmark hydro wb so I at least have something to fly on til Its tuned up. Good luck!

How good does the 4" deep deck on the mini z do in tall lush grass like you have in the spring time? Does it suck up the grass that the front wheels mash down?

But my 23hp Mini (20" wheels) has standard blades doubled with Gators, and it all but sucks a golf ball through a garden hose.

3 year owner of Super Z, 60", 25 HP Kawi, no costs except fuel, and routine fluids and filters. Awesome cut, no wet grass pop ups. It`s just fast and very efficient. It was an inspired moment when I bought this pup, wish all my expenditures were this good. Using a Gator type blade early, and late for leaf mulching, use a flat blade during dry times.

:cool2: <<Me doing the happy hustler dance, lol.

I am sorry about your problems, Hustler will be more than glad to help you I feel assured. I would like to know what kind of problems you had and with which machines. This is actually the first time I've heard of any problems that Hustler did not take care of. I know a lot of people that run Hustlers and I go to church with my dealer which has sold about 500 units this year.I just ordered a new Super Z which will be my fourth in 5 years and I had paint problems with one mower and they took care of me immediately. I put over 200 hrs. a year on my mowers for personal mowing on my farm and this is very rough mowing.

THANKS REID

I need a Honest and truthfull answer,, Will the SuperMiniZ(25hp,52") cut well in wet thick conditions? and all other conditions?

I'm seriously looking at this machine because I can't afford the SuperZ(same size)
I could get the SuperminiZ for about 7700(less tax)

SHOULD I BUY IT & Will I really be happy?

Yes.
You are getting a great deal and it is a awesome machine, don't hesitate.
You will love the unit and the production of the Super Mini Z.
It cuts great and will go through anything and leave a great finish cut.
Use the search feature here on LS, you can find a lot of reading there, from actual end users that use this mower everyday.

Thanks again PJ - I also need the 2 bagger collection system and for an addt'l $2000 (grasscatchersusa) which everyone says is the better unit Its just real tough decision if I want to put out almost $10,000 cuz thats what I make yearly.....

Are you catching every lawn? every single cut all year round?
If not, then I would suggest our 2 bag catcher.
Here is the information....
Kit, BAC-VAC 44" & 52" Mini Z / Super Mini Z TWO BAG with Vertical Blower Part # 927665 ** $799
Requires 104463 Weight Kit
Kit, Front Weight, Fits 44" & 52" Mini Z / Super Mini Z 104463 $69

This catching system will work great, and it is at a great price.
Be sure to order the weight with it, it does not come with it.
Here is a picture of it on the Super Mini Z.

Not catching every day but, not one person has suggested buying your catcher system. It clogs when conditions are wet. I would use it mostly in the spring/fall for cleanups,, some of my lawns get pretty thick with leaves.

I just get a lot of funny looks when I say I want to buy your collection,, not worth the money I've been told.

The catching system works great, no problems clogging, that any other catcher wouldn't clog in also.
The grasscatcherusa model has the Hustler blower and mount (horizontal), a different design is used in the vertical shaft model, thus allowing us to get the cost down.
Either way you are getting a Hustler blower and design, so it is all good, just depends on how much you want to spend.

I didn't mean to bash you or Hustler but dealers have told me that the $800 unit will clog more often than others,, more of a home owner setup.

I've used the collection system by others (exmark) and they never clog,, unless the bags are full and you don't empty....

Thanks a lot for you input,, I'll check back with my dealer,,
EITHER WAY ITS HUSTLER OR NOTHING.

Will this setup work on the earlier model Super Mini Z ( I believe the super mini z changed(bigger tires/etc...) a bit within the last few years but I may be mistaken)? I have the super mini z before the changes and just want to make sure it will work before ordering it.

Thanks in advance!

thanks for checking for me!

Followup question: Are these available now?

I stopped by my local Hustler dealer and the person I talked to at first didn't know what I was talking about and then said they wouldn't be available for a few months. Should I head back and talk to someone else?

I just checked inventory levels across the country, and we have plenty of them.
Double check with the dealer, and have him call his rep if needed.

hopefully my last question:

Do you recommend a high lift "bagging" type blade(I saw in past posts that you sometimes recommend this) for this setup on my super mini z or will the system work fine with my standard configuration? If so, which blade do you suggest?

mowerconsultant
03-15-2006, 10:17 AM
With the unit having a blower, you really don't need a set of high lifts.
