I'm looking for some info. on preventing the ground from freezing so excuvating can be done sometime in Feb. The area is 5000 sq ft. I have heard about laying plastic then hay, plastic, hay and then nylon netting. I don't know the exact procedure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

perhaps 1-2' of leaf compost spread over the area with some tarps. that should generate some heat for a good length of time.

You could use a foot of corn silage, that oughta keep the earthworms drunk for a while. Actually I would lay about 6 inches of Hay, then a plastic layer, and maybe another tarp. You don't want to get too much water in there or youl have a mess moving the straw later. I use this method to overwinter carrots in the garden. Works fine all winter. For wisconsin you might need more. Keep it simple. Old tires work great to hold down tarps.
