Step 1: Take a stock Mazda V6.
Step 2: Add 25 psi of turbocharged fury.
Step 3: Go lean.
To be fair, it survived over 50 1/4 mile passes and 35 dyno pulls. (11.05 at 125 best time...not bad for a FWD).

I'd say the oddest thing is the wristpin through the top of the piston.

That thing looks just like one of them high dollar self draining boat anchors ;)
It's gotta be one of the worst implosions I've ever seen, Did it lite up when it went ?

YUP! I'd say that pretty much took care of that.

What makes you think that engine is destroyed?
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob, its not my engine, its another guy a online car club I belong too. I had one, but I stayed at a pretty moderate boost (15 psi).
This engine dynoed just a hair over 500 whp. Damn impressive for 2.5 litres.
Here is a video of the run he blew it on. Its from inside, but you can see the engine smoke come in the cab when it goes.

Gotta love hearing that turbo whistle.

wow.
I've never seen an engine that shredded. what are those silver things? metal shavings?
Dirty Water

Those are pieces of piston #6.
It was completely gone.
Piston #5 had the wristpin tear out of the rod and go through the piston...very odd.
You can see that here:

ok, so how did the shavings get on top of the engine?
what was the probable cause of failure? to high rpms with too much boost?

They aren't, your looking at the block upside down. The oil pump, block stiffener and main caps have been removed in the rest of the pictures. The one with a ton of shavings was what he saw the moment he took the oil pan off.
The heads are already off.
Cause of failure was massive predetonation due to not enough fuel per amount of air entering.
Basicly, the cylinders all fired out of order.

I'm waiting for Uniscaper to come in and say you can't make any power out of small displacement engines :)

Ya got that right Jon, But hearing a BIG block thumper with a gear drive coming up the road sounds SWEEEEET also.

Agreed :)
I have a lot of respect for high power small engines, but no respect for the average honda boy with a loud muffler :)

 I agree with that one, We have quite a few of them running around here also, all noise with no poise. Mommy and Daddy give um a car and they run out and strap that over sized noise maker on. :dizzy:

We have a ton of those things running around here. All the little 16 yr olds think they're cool by reving their fart pipe at the traffic lights. Makes ya wonder if they know how bad it sounds when your outside of one. I have some friends that are big into road racing 280Z's (on a track, nothing illegal) those engines sound nice with a turbo or two, a straight pipe and whatever else they added to the engine.

Basically, you can't, but what you showed here is a pretty darn good try, Jon.
But I will say, it kind of reminds me of the time my crew chief talked the team into changing plugs for the next run while at the same time bumping nitro up to 86%. Can you say eat supercharger? We counted 7 airborne pistons in the video. And for what? If I had every dime I put into that boat i could retire:):):)

That was the stock engine :) This guy has almost finished assembling motor #2. You can see that the rods/wristpin and piston are the weakpoints of the stock motor by surveying the damage.
This time he has forged H-beam rods, and as well as new pistons and wristpins rated supposedly rated to withstand 800hp.
If he can manage not to lean out this time, he may put down 600+ WHP dyno numbers and break into the 10's or possibly 9's.
Not bad for 2.5 litres.
Edit: This reminds me of what another guy did with a 2 litre mazda 4 cylinder. Those engines are tough, and really like to be boosted :)

Carillo H beams can take 1200 plus HP on gas, 12,500 RPM. I think the biggest challenge over 10,000 is not the rods being able to withstand the load, it's being able to keep enough oil rolling through the engine under the load.
That's a pretty impressive chart for a little 6 banger.

Well, at least scrap aluminum is fetching pretty good prices these days:D

I have seen an engine that was a close second to that one but yours wins hands down. This man over in Green Creek some years back tried to put NOS on his V-8. The push rods were sticking in the ceiling of his garage when I got there. The hood was down when the engine blow and it looked like a machine gun had goten a hold of it. Just how many revs was that thing doing when it came apart any way?

Ever seen a Top Fuel motor after it decides to let go?? They're really pretty when they get 2 or 3 rods stickin out the side.

I have to say that is an impressive mess. I can't say I've seen anything quite like that. I'd like to see a little car move that fast. That'd be kind of fun. Most of the little rice burners that run back in Shreveport usually avg. around 14-16 in the 1/4.
I run 11.5's in my old Cougar all the time. No blower. No nos. Just big block and super unleaded. We are going to go up to a bigger carb and see what more we can get out of it before we start dumping money into it. currently we have less than 2k total into it.
