When your asked to come up with a design/layout for a landscape job, IE: retaining wall, mulch beds, plants and such, how do you present your idea(s) to the customer? Do you use computer software to print out a design or do you hand draw it?

Computer imaging, and/or cad drawing.

First, we interview over the phone to see if that person is even qualifyed or us to do the work. After they pass, we charge $250.00 for 2 hours of our time to meet with them. You don't have to charge that much, we do because that is what it costs for us to profit for our time. You could easily get away with $50.00 just to tell someone your time is worth something.
After that, we sit, discuss all the needs and set a realisitic budget. Our goal, is to be able to install a project at or under the projected budget. Some jobs are nixed at this phase. Others are pieced together with infrastructure first, and every few months we return to do more. After the budget is apporved, we produce preliminary conceptual drawings, subject to modification, and cost variances. After that, the final drawings are submitted for acceptance, and the work is scheduled.
Make your time of some value, or you are going to be drawing everything for nothing.
