How bout it? I usually go to my buddies house and put them against the grinding wheel, it works but I don't really know HOW I SHOULD be doing it. Any tips?

You might try striking bone with it this works.

I alway have the wheel rotate toward the blade.
Now that I'm back in business again, I put my small angle grinder under the back seat with a set of safety glasses. I like to sharpen shovels, ax, etc., several times during landscaping work.

I use a bench grinder. However, way back in the day when I was in boy scouts, I recall using something called a whit(sp?) stone. It was like a flat stone that you would evenly scrape one edge of the axe on over and over. It worked, but took forever.

file works awesome..
Watch out using a grinder if its a quality tool. You don't want to put too much heat in the edge or it wrecks the temper. If its a cheapy go for it.
