What are you planting, a nursery? I hope you have a good sized crew that is a lot of plant material. With that much material you are going to have to use a decent sized grower. I would look at some the growers in the northwest for the conifers. You might want to look at bare root stock for anything under two inches.

I would call up the biggest nursery around and talk with the owner. with an order that large you will get some a serious discount, especially if you can afford to do it with CASH.

Can't help you tell you know what you are going to have to pay for the plants. That is alot of material..
I would try and get money up front for an order like that no use in you getting stuck with holding the bag on that amount of material.Get on the phone and start calling growers in your state.

I'd see if there can be an allowance for substitute trees in case some are unavailable.

When I prepare landscape designs, I frequently list a substitute tree option for certain trees so an installer and property owner have a choice.

RSK2,

How many installations have you done prior to this one? I ask because with your 15 man crew, I'd think you'd have a general idea.

Are you asking as "how close to cut it" on this large of an install percentage wise to be competitive?

Just a couple of questions to think about

Are the Plants being put into established beds,or is part of the job design and creation?

Do you have the equipment to handle the job or will you need to rent it?

Is water ready and available or will you use a water tank ?

Is there a lead time that the nursery may need to obtain the numbers of trees?

That'a one BIG job:dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:
It might be better to team up with someone you know in the landscape side of this business and split the profits.
Don't let the $$$ get in the way of making the right decision. Sometimes you need to realize your limitations- this may be one.
I brought on another landscaper last year on a larger account- we both walked away very happy and tired. He brought a lot of knowledge that I didn't have to the table- worth every penny!

Good luck,

kc

You are asking for information that most buyers have accumulated over the years. Buying from Shemin ( a rewholesaler) will add another layer of markup to your costs. That quantity of trees will come fromm many different sources to make up the variety and quantity. The next question to ask is are the trees going on a commercial project, can the quality be less than #1, and will you have a staging area with water available to keep the plants alive while you prepare the planting area. A loaded truck will typically hold 120 2" caliper trees if the nursery knows how to stack safely and correctly and the soil is not waterlogged (weight of the loaded truck. You are looking at around 15 fully loaded tractor trailers. Freight is paid typically COD apart from any deals you make with the nursery.

Your best price on the maples will be from Tennesee, freight will be roughly $2000 per truck. The hemlocks will be from North Carolina, freight about $1750. White pines from southern Virginia, freight $1500. The container plants can come from North Carolina or Georgia. The comment about plants from the northwest is incorrect. As a whole the only plants valuable enough too pay a $4000 freight bill are the jap maples and quality conifers along with commodity containers.

As an unestablished customer it will be tough getting into line to purchase stock over established repeat clients. If you are serious the next nursery show is in Boston...New England Grows 1/31 - 2/1. You could find much of your information there. You already missed the first show in Baltimore. Good Luck

Instead of getting your friend to let you use something-- maybe you should sub-contract out the parts that you do not have equipment for,and concentrate on the install.Sounds like it should be enough work and money to go around.

For your materials and trees, as much as i don't want to give them business, checkout Strathmeyer's. You have probably heard of them, their landscaping sucks but there tree farms are nice and have cheap wholesale trees. Thats where alot of the christmas tree's come from.

At least you have some nice looking plants on that list.

And the holly numbers look good.

I suppose the holly will be in small groups of 3 or 5? Because only one male is needed per group for berries.

Looks like enough trees for a plantation.

You should enjoy the final walk-through on that when you are done.
