View Full Version : Who Would You Like To Work With???

MarcusLndscp

In spending so much time on LS you can really tell who truly knows their trade. It got me thinking...who on here would you like to sit next to for a week or two in his or her truck just to watch them work and see truly how talented they are? Whether it's people actually doing installs or the ones that are doing more of the management...either way. List one, two, or three people. Who do you think you could learn a lot from???

Hands down I would chose UNISCAPER.....I think I'd leave knowing 10 times what I know now

mbella

I would like to lay pavers with Anna Kournikova (her uniform would consist of a thong, period). I think it would be interesting for several reasons.

Seriously, I would like to build a retaining wall with Bill Schwab (Uniscaper.) Hands down, the man.

I would also like to do a wet lay flag job with TREEDOC. Again, from what I've seen on this site with regard to wet lay, hands down, the man.

I think I would also enjoy counting Olderthandirt's money for a week.

If I wanted to feel superrior and "better than", I'd work with Chris (CGLAND) for five minutes. LOL.

01-28-2006, 08:27 PM
LOL Mike!
Others for me would be DFelix, CGLand, Treedoc, Kris, Squizzy, yeah I guess MBella. One person you don't want to work with is that GreenMonster guy. What a pain in the azz!:p

Working with my wife or with Mike (Mbella) would be the same. They are both very critical......wife has bigger cans so i'd go with her.
A few $$$ would shut her up.
Ive worked with Olderthandirt....like being short stacked at the final table of a poker game cash wise.

Absolutely. I'd love to work with all of you guys. Well, with the exception of that Greenmonster. I have enough drama in my life. I don't need steppers spray painted or anything like that.

Seriously, I answered honestly. For the reasons I mentioned in my previous post, there are two members that stand out, Bill Schwab (Uniscaper) and TREEDOC.

They may not post as much as the rest of us, but when they do, it is meaningful. Well, it's meaningful for me at least.

Well, well, well! Great post! I would like to work with Marcus or Treedoc, just to learn the ins and outs of wet lay and dry lay stonework. I would also like to work with Bill and pick his brain. I would also love to work with Mbella, so I can see all of the advice I've given him in action. I'm afraid if I worked with Green Monster he would start calling me all the time then Marcus would get jealous and it would be a huge soap opera mess!:p
Seriously, there is a core group in the hardscaping forum that I would like to sit down with. HHHMMMM! Maybe we should set up a day to all meet somewhere and have lunch. Mike..set that up for me!

Bill Schwab #1 - Not necessarily for his knowledge of walls, which he is hands down the most knowledgeable about, I think I would really like to sit down and see how his systems are put to use. He seems to have VERY efficient ways of doing things.

Rex Mann really seems to have it going on if he is only dropping pavers in sand and walking away from a job, he was always throwing out some ridiculous sq footage numbers for a days work. Once again, systems.

I am not sure if it was GreenMonster or Marcus that had all those winter time work photos from his jobsite. I think to pick the brain that had that ingenuity would be MORE than interesting for a few days, sort of like hanging out with Doc Brown from Back to the Future.

Mbella - I abuse his phone so much, he should be at the top of my list, but he called me fat in another thread. So he is forth on my list.

CGland? I have already seen all of his work, he puts a picture in everyone elses thread (LOL). But seriously, he seems like a very intelligent business man, in the little dealings I have had with him he had some very sound business advice. I actually have it printed out and pinned up on my board above my desk.

Is this the "ass kissing thread" or the "who would I like to work with thread" because after proofreading this I think I have them confused?

I would have to say UNISCAPER , CGLAND, Mbella, Squizzy, iand etwman in no particular order. I'm sure ther are other that I have not mentioned that are also very skilled, those are just the guys that i see contributing the most. Its funny that this came up, I was just saying tonight to someone that I would love to spend a few days down near Reading PA to watch a few guys work and really learn wall building from them. I have learned alot of what i know so far from teaching myself, but watching and working with someone that really knows there stuff is better than reading 10 books.

Great thread,

Frig that!...I'm not working with any of you frosty boys at this time of year...all I own in clothes is shorts and work shirts....it would cost me more than the airfare in bloody cold weather gear.

I'd like to work with Haze for awhile just to find out where he puts all his sprinklers so I could run around and knock them out with a skid after:)

Now comes the serious bit::cool:

I'm in the process of trying to educate my clients that just cause we have zillions of tonnes of limestone to use here that is no reason to use it all the time. We want to expand our repetoire somewhat and do some granite as well as larger size SRW instead of just garden bed stuff. Because Bill has similar soil types to us (ie. Crap) I'd definetly take the opportunity to look at some of Bill's work first hand. Then I like to watch Marcus build a few stone steps and stuff like his diving trips in the excavator.....course then there would be all the socialising I'd like to do with lots of people on this board:drinkup:

Course if I ever earn some money I might take a trip to the States

Someone mentioned TreeDoc and Marcus for wet flag work. I'd like to work with one of them doing that too. I could likely put up with Mark's personality (or lack thereof) for a day to learn more about wet stone work.

You're always welcome. We're devising sneaky ways of taking out Squizzy's walls with our irrigation. After all, CA is where hydraulic mining was once used quite alot. If it can tear the snot out of a mountainside and ruin the stream ecology then I'm sure it would work on limestone walls. :p

I would love to learn wet flag work.,,,,something I have only done once with a guy in the early 80's.

I have great respect for anyone who is passionate about hardscape and there are quite a few on LS. I think I could put a kick azz crew together from the guys mentioned. ... that is what I am best at these days. .... after years(started in 77') spent on the sites I am now more on the other side and rarely hands on. Ive learned that to be good I have to surround myself with people better than me .... guys right down to the newest hire can teach you lots. I just heard a saying that I think was great... "You learn the most after you think you know it all".... isn't that the truth...never stop learning.

People with a great desire but little skill give me the biggest kicks... the amazement in their eyes when you show them little tricks of the trade or dazzle them with your machine operating skill that saves them hours of back breaking work is priceless. That being said i would have to say (to pick one) that I would pick sheshovel. I think she has the passion needed and would like to teach her some hardscape.

I'm pretty new to the hardscape side of the landscape install bus. so I would like to learn from just about anyone on here. Some of the installs that I have seen that not many people have mentioned are Kris and ETWman. I think etwman definitely has his installs down to a science as far as efficiency goes. But, being from Kansas I would just like to see some companies in action outside of this area.

I agree cleancutccl, I was looking through this old thread last night http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=88567 and saw a few pics from guys we haven't seen in a while. One being Kris, he does some really nice stuff. I see his name floating around other forums but not much in here, wish he'd continue to post pics for us in the hardscape forum. I remember seeing ETWman a few times but can't really remember his work. Maybe your bringing him up will get him to post again too.
Another cool thing to view like you mentioned are the regional differences between all of our work. UNISCAPER deals w/ earthquakes, Squizzy deals w/ real sandy soils and drunken kangaroos, some of us deal with more extreme winters than others, etc etc. While most of our basic practices may be the same they all vary a little due to our specific regions.

hey, hey, let's hear more about this book Ms. Feng Shui
Well,it is about the art and craft of placing stone and ML asked me about it so I said I would send him a copy as I have 2.
You can plan and manipulate the way in which you place stones to direct, influence,or inspire the viewers perspective of and emotional response to the landscape. That is the basic principle.
Focal Point-Framing-Directing eye movement-Contrast-Depth-Bioregional Context
Avoiding Obfuscation-Primarysecondary and Tertiary
points of View-Dyamic Space-Lines of Force-Implyed
Planes-False Perspective-Tangential Lines-Lines of Redirection---stuff like that..
Is all covered in this book and
it also has stone lay out plans you can use like--Rabbits Rump
Dragons Tail-Serpintines Spine-The Tao-Orca-Stone Flower-Trolls Causeway-Swimming Dragon

Oh boy! I think we have a situation here. ............................I really want to comment about what I just read, but I have no idea what to say. I'm absolutely speechless.

What's running through my head?:dizzy: Visions of sexual oooze between GM, SS, and CG who is somehow involved with a young girl thought :nono: from some other sick thread he posted in, all the while Squizzy is off in some corner having a "SPECIAL MOMENT" with himself and a stone magazine and MBella sitting there getting drunk:drinkup: watching him cause he's trying to make CG jealous for being sexually oooozed with SS and GM. What is wrong with you people??????? You're all sick! :alien:

Thank you for the humor....I love it!

Sheshovel - I am a happily married man.....besides you don't want to piss Mike off. He gets very jealous....(If you are reading this please send for help!!!)...Oh God! Hes coming! I have to go!................................................................................................. ........................................

Chris

MARCUS! Lets reel this one in just a little.

HAVE WE figured out WHO is "coming"? Is it Mike? Is it?????? I think the sicko or sickos are definitely in PA. If we psychologically analyze the whole above statement, it reads like the this:

Happily married man piss Mike jealous help oh coming......have to go.

It almost sounds like Mike is coming.........with Chris and he is so embarrassed he rushed off the computer.

That is just my ANALysis of the situation.

It seems as if Drafto is living his gay fantasies out online. Hey, it's your lifestyle and I think that it's great that your coming out of the closet. I really respect you for that. I takes a "special" person to change what I typed into what you perceived. Keep it real.....................real gay!

Well, this thread has certainly spiraled out of control. My wife thought so to, reading over my shoulder:realmad:

anyway, probably beyond repair, but I'll try:

I'd like to work with DFelix too. Seems pretty educated in many aspects of landscape. Of course, he knows there is a job waiting for him in NH whenever he's ready

Personally i wouldnt mind workin with anyone on here, Im always open to any new ways or ideas. And like they say two heads are better then one. Now what would be really cool is if there was a convention for lawnsite.com where everyone got together to meet at once and everyone that wanted to did a presentation on thier techniques or ways they do the various forms of landscaping there are. I definatly think it would be an informative meeting, and it would be pretty cool to meet everyone........have a good day
