View Full Version : Cut in the rain?
Just wondering how many people cut in the rain? I will be cutting in light rain this year, cause I feel now, that there is alot of revenue lost and your schedule gets thrown out of whack.
Thoughts anybody?

Sometime you gotta do what you gotta do. ;) Although it sucks when you gotta do it!

hey, if i were in ur situation i would say go for it, only things i would worry about are equipment getting wet, and is it ok to mow in wet grass, does it effect looks and or growth, if answer to these are no, then i would go for it, its just water u know. today i spread a hole lot of mulch in the pouring rain, im still alive :-))))

If it's going to rain for several days, we put on the rain gear and hit it. If it's lightning out, we head for the house until it quits. Where we mow is one of the highest points around and I do have respect for lightning.
If it's just a one day all day rain, we just stay home. I'd rather mow when it's not so wet, especially if it's cold out. It's just not worth getting sick.

Just cut today in the rain. Mower held up well and clippings clumped a little. Went over with the blower and took a little longer but its better than doubling up on an already busy day :)
I have tried to cut in the rain before and customers complained they said they would rather the lawn get a little high then see mow in the rain. Maybe you could get away with it on commercial properties but I would be careful on residentials. Use rainy days for sidework or paper work and just work longer days on those sunny days.

I do not mind cutting in the rain however I think my shortcut does. It cuts fine with the exception of the blades getting dull really fast. The problem I have run into is when I put the mower up for the weekend and it dries up my steering gets stiff. The t-bar set up doesn't like to get wet. So I pretty much do not cut in the rain any more unless I really have to. Also I hate it when I get cought in summer showers at the end of the day and the equipment is still hot. I put my stuff up in dry storage every day after we use it and reload in the mornings. It seems a hassle but I have come to not even liking dew on my equipment.

If I start on a yard, I always finish it...I've mow some commercial properties if it starts out raining in the mornings....However, I try to stay away from mowing residentials in the rain but that may have to change this year...Derrick

We cut in the rain if we have to. Last year there where a couple days in the that we cut in the POURING rain, we got a bit wet but no compliants. Light rain we alaways cut in. The only thing that I hate is when the grass gets stuck to the deck than falls of in clumps when you hit a bump.
During lightning we try to just stay in the the big open fields. =) j/k
I don't mind a light rain, but hate those downpours. Do not like to leave a lawn unfinished though. What blades do you all like to use best in wet grass? Thank you.

I would melt so I generally don't do it.
Bermuda is not a real good grass to cut when it's wet so that's really out of the question, centipede on the other hand cut's OK so there may be some days when we have to get wet. Down here though in the summer if it rains in the afternoon it usually comes hard and heavy with lightning. Wife say's she would kill me if I got killed trying to mow in a lightning storm..............go figure.

Don't let Marge do that. :D
I DON'T cut in the rain. Bermuda and Zoysia don't lift up well when wet. Fescue stands up better. I will generally give it a few hours to dry first.

I don't like to mow in the rain because I have a belt drive mower. The other day I was mowing a residential property with a real steep back yard and as stupid as it may seem, I mowed up and down the hill(this was the first and last time I will ever do that on this yard). Well anyway before I was done it started to rain lightly. My tires would not lock up and even if they did I was still gonna come down the hill. I had to bail out for the first time ever! I tried turning slightly half way down the hill, but my WB fish tailed and the handle bars hit a tree. The OPC didn't kill the engine fast enough and after I had let go it continued and hit another tree. I was lucky to come out of that one alive. I guess I better rethink that workman's comp deal!
What I hate in the rain is the grass won't blow off of sidewalks once it is wet.

As hot as it gets here during the summer, I wiah it would rain everyday while I'm mowing. Not the cats and dogs kinda rain, but a light shower would be great. Makes it hard to blow the walkways etc. off but thats ok I can blame it on the rain!

Not here it clumps and it sticks to everything including me.
Here we are just getting over alot of rain and I was mowing with the deflector pulled up so it wouldnt clump but then it hit the house it hit their little metal shed, I had to wash the little shed just taking more of my time, but that was better than losing the customer I guess.

I cut in the rain,if my shedule wont allow me to come back at another time. The biggest problem I have is keeping the deck from plugging up.if there is a puddle around,I mow over it,and it will partially clear the deck enough to continue for another 10 minutes. If I can keep the deck clean, the cut seems good,no clumping at all, even in tall grass.

A rainy day is bad day & its a good day. its a bad day cause
you get all wet the grass sometimes makes clumpage and you
got to clean your mowers which i do 2times a week anyway,
Its a good day because its rain/water without it we cut DUST
and we know how much fun that can be.. CLARKE:-))
