Was weedeating a vets office yesterday. Close to a huge car lot. The vets office had a few weeks before a septic tank and lines put in. Clogs of dirt and rocks were in the grass. I was weedeating in that area. Must have hit a rock. It flew 20' hit the rear windshield of a 1999 truck. A salesman heard it from accross the lot and came running over and yell he busted the windshield. They said a new solid windshield would run over 1300$$. But the manager said since it was a used truck he didnt care if they put a sliding glass type. 266$ installed. Anyway insurance will pay for it. I have been cutting that yard for 10 years and nothing like that has ever happen. I have never had a weedeater sling anything that hard and far enough to bust out a window. it was a 2100 echo. )(*&%%
When we mow with our 20 ft batwing on the field, we have had reports of debris flying out and hitting planes parked over 100 ft away. Price of the average plane...between 3 to 56 million. Imagine the cost of fixing one of those windshields.
Don't feel bad. Just another day in this business.
steveair

heheh Dont feel bad, one of my guys did the same thing. He was edging a side walk and he picked up a rock. Hit a all glass storm door. Shatered the whole thing. Had to send the door to New Jersey to get the tempered glass put in. Apparently they are the closest to the NOVA area who have the right equipment. Any way i know how you feel

Charles,
we have a load of insurance, so are covered for it. However, it is greatly frowned upon.
We have had only minor instances so far, but I know we are in for a big one sooner or later. I'm trying to push to use smaller equipment by the planes, to reduce risk, and I think we are going to move in that direction.......
One day, during daily inspections, someone backed up a pickup into a smaller single prop plane a few years ago. The bill was in the thousands, and he hardly dented it. With the big planes, just a scratch or a little dent in the body can cost a fortune. All aluminum, hand rolled almost. When birds hit them while landing, it can cost 10,000 just to repair one panel. Parts have to be hand made and then shipped from far away places.....
steveair

Thats why when you hit a rock or something when mowing or trimming ALWAYS look down or keep on doing what you were doing. Don't be looking all around to see where you launched that rock. If you are near a road and waste a window they have zero proof that it came from your mower. You can just say that it came from the car in front of them. Let their insurance handle it. Thats why THEY have insurance.

I'm not sure how everybody else's state Ins.
policies are but in KY if any window that is considered safety glass is busted out of a vehicle the automotive Ins. co. has to cover the cost of that window with no deductible and no insurance hike.
Brook

I have broken several windows over the last 5 yrs. Twice at the same house a week apart. No big deal. I just call adjuster tell him what I did, then call glass shop to have it fixed. Glass shop sents insurance company the bill. Rates have not gone up, nor have they threatened to cancel me.
Last year I broke a side window out of a 85 Buick that was sitting on blocks. Could have kept my mouth shut and the customer would not have know that I did it. But I got the window fixed instead. Why not, I broke it. Thats what I have insurance for.
Jim

HAD A GUY STOP LAST YEAR AND CLAIM I THREW A ROCK INTO THE WINDOW OF A BORROWED VAN. SEEMS HE HAD TAKEN IT OVERNIGHT FROM A CAR LOT TO TRY IT OUT. HE WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN I "SUPPOSEDLEY" CHUNKED A ROCK OFF THE BLADE AND HIT HIS WINDSHIELD. MY LAWYER (I HAD TO ASK) TOLD ME THE INSURANCE CO. WOULD PROPBABLY NOT PAY, EVEN IF I ADMITTED FAULT, DUE TO THE CIRCUMASTANCE. HAD HE BEEN PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AND I HIT IT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NO PROBLEM(BEEN THERE, DONE THAT). GUY CALLED AND CALLED BUT HE NEVER GOT ANYTHING FROM ME. I WAS MOWING BAHAI AT 3" WHEN HE RODE BY, I TOLD HIM IT HAD TO BE A PRETTY GOOD SIZED ROCK FOR ME TO HAVE DONE THE DEED. HE TOLD ME I WAS A DISHONEST PERSON AND I WOULD PAY FOR IT IN THE LONG RUN! I LET HIM KNOW THAT IF I KNEW BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF ALREADY.
HOMER

I had a rock fly out of the opposite side of the discharge chute and shatter a large picture
window where my customer had been sittig about 30 second earlier! We were both a little shook up on that one. Had the glass guy
there in about an hour and the bill was $200.
My customer was really good about this which
shows the value of taking responsiblity for your actions and payed for half the bill despite my objections. I ended up giving her 100 worth of free service.
----------
gus....
I was edging a new customer (next to an old customer) last year. Her lawn was a jungle, it was so high in some places i used my trimmer instead of my mower. Anyway i'm edging, and finding and keeping the edge was dificult because it was so overgrown. I asked the lady to roll up her Jeep Grand Wagoneer windows, so i wouldn't get dust in it from my blower. When she shut the door, the rear glass shattered. I knew it was my fault. So, because i didn't have insurance, i told her I'd eat the $50, until her insurance company worked it out. I never heard from her again. She wasn't angry at me, but i was shocked afterwards. From now on people have to move their cars for edging, especially new or first time.

Hey Charles My brother hit a dead soldier (empty beer botle) while weed eating under a hedge, he had short pants on. The glass hit an artery and he had to visit the ER. Weve done a few windows also.
----------
Bobby
Ft Lauderdale

We had an case similar to these but we did not pay.We were clearing brush in a fenced in lot.Next door was a #pple auto glass shop.We were cutting all the weeds down and a guy came up to me on the other side of the fence from that store. He told us to be careful becouse a guy was doing the same thing last year and chucked a rock and hit one of the truck toppers out front. He told me that the guy never paid them and they were out the money.I was very nice and said that is no problem we will be careful so on and so on.Well the next day we got a call from the contractor that owns the property and told us that they said that we hit one of their toppers with a stone. We told the contractor not to get upset. We will pay if we did any damage.Well we went there and talked to the owner. He took us to the topper and we looked at the damage.I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!The stone chip that he was talking about was not a stone chip.It was a chip that would have been made by a down ward hit it looked like circle with a tail going down the side. The cut not only did not match a stone chip but it was the size of an inch or more around. To make that size of chip you would need at least a rock that size.We told him that there was no way our trimmers could make that kind of damage. And also told him how one of his guys came out the day before and said the samething happened last year.He did not say much when we told him that!We also told him that our trimmers did not have blades on at the time and we where using trimmer line.I even tested the idea a while later to see if it was possible to do that with our trimmers.I hit a 3/4 rock at full speed and if moved it about 1 foot.I am an honest man.I have payed for many other damages done at other places but in this case I am know that they were just trying to make us pay for an allready damaged topper.Have any of you had someonr try to blame damage on you????
from:Adam
AB Lawn Care

Richard was probably so depressed cause it so cloudy up there in WA. Richard seems to be on laid back dude. Cant imagine him throwing a weedeater through a window cause he was mad.

Car windows are my specialty! I at least have one boo boo a year. In the area of Daly City, for the most part, San Francisco, a lot of roofs use tar and gravel. After heavy rains, these little pieces of rock get stuck between the walkway and grass. Gets hit by the weed whacker line and becomes instant bullets. I even have broken my own windows on my vehicle a few times. Most windows slip out; have a client that owns a window shop, so we just barter for the glass. In extreme cases, I have him come out and do repairs. Keeps his wife happy because the landscaping around his home is always getting something new.
Jean
I once sent a rock through a van at a carlot while edging. The car lot owner just took it out of the bill. The second window was a recent one. I sent a radio speaker, that someone had tossed out on the side of the road, into a daycare center's van. I just thank God that there weren't any kids in it at the time. They paid for it themselves and told me not to worry about it.
Lastly, I once had an idiot employee walk across a driveway without lifting the weedeater high enough or stop pulling on the throttle. He left whirly marks all the way across the hood of a new car on a new client. The client was nice about it and I only ended up paying three hundred bucks to have the hood repainted.

Yesterday at a customers house I was starting the wbh for the first cut of the year. The customers was sitting on the deck having a cool drink with their grand children. I had pushed the mower acroos part of the lawn where my wife was picking up pine cones, unknown to me I pushed over top of one and when I pulled the recoil it fired right up and shot that pine cone right at the picture window, thank god it just bounced off the glass. The customer just looked over and never said anything, I asked if they could go inside for a 1/2 hour while I cut the lawn. From now on I will point the discharge at the hedge when I start it.

I got hit Tuesday by a flying piece of wood from a Exmark mowing the lot next door about 85 yards away!
