Yeah, I like them a lot. If fact they are my favorite.

I just bought a replacement briggs 22hp intek engine. I was telling a local engine repair shop about it and said I should of bought the vangaurd. The vangaurd is a commercial engine rated at about 4000 hrs verses my 1000 hrs. At least that's what he said.
I had a vangaurd 16HP on my Lesco truck loader and had no problems.

Not sure about 4000 hours, but surely will outlast an intek.

Since July, I've used the 31 HP Vanguard on an Exmark XS 60" deck. Tons of power, but I think any 31 HP engine would be very powerful on a 60" deck. I do like the sound the engine makes, however.

The Vanguard is a sweet running engine, I'm sure you will be pleased with it's performance.

I've seen them still ticking along like a sewing machine in the 3,000 hour range.

Seems the only thing I see on them is a valve cover leak, which most of them have at that age.

I had a Bobcat 21" mower with a Vanguard replacement engine on it. Thing was a tank. Its the only Briggs engine I've ever liked. Not cheap though.

The other company I work for has 20 HP Vanguards on all of their Wright Standers and they have had many problems, but I think some of that is attributed to poor maintenance and cheap oil being used.

A friend of ours sells commercial lawn and power equipment and we asked him about briggs engines one day. He looked at us and with a big smile said "oh dont you mean Briggs and scrap iron?". I just about fell on the ground laughing but he did say that the vanguard was a good engine but the rest was pretty much just junk.

I have a 42 Encore ZTR with a 16 Vangaurd. It has a little over 2000 hours and still running strong. I will probably sell it in the next couple weeks though because I'm getting a larger ZTR:D

All of the Vanguard motors are Japanese made,,, either by Mitsubishi or Fuji,,, not really sure which one. I have one 16hp and one 18hp horizontals. Just don't mount a gas tank up "too high" above the engine. The fuel pressure on the carb pushed fuel past the needle in the carb and diluted the engines oil making it smoke some. I lowered the gas tank and changed the oil and the motor smoking stopped. My fault. My two engines have been trouble free other than normal maintanance.
