I just heard today that the wonderful state of NJ is adding some more rules. This may just be hear say, but in NJ anything is possible.

1. Heard that they are going to require an additional lic. permit to plant anything (flowers, shrubs etc.). I asked the guy if it was the same thing as the Home Improvement Reg# that we are now required to have, and he said that this is something different.

2. Also heard that they are working on passing a statute that would require anyone that does tree work to have a four year college degree.

Again, I am not sure if these things are true, but anything is possible with NJ.

The old saying stands true, a working man does not have a chance

It takes a 4 year college degree to learn how to properly cut a tree down??? That is news to me!!! I would think you would learn that out in the field or at a vocational technical school cirricumlem. Just my $.02!
Best of luck dealing with the changes!

So what about the old man who has been in the tree business for 40 years?
He's not gonna go to school! Nor would his son if he's 40yrs old and been doin it for 20yrs. That's BS. They need to rethink that one.

Playing devils advocate...

I'm willing to bet a bunch of people don't realize in Union county, specifically Rahway, there is the long horn beetle infestation that is devasting the trees in the city. There are sections of rahway they have been working on to control the spreed of this problem...even though it has now been found in hunterdon and somerset counties now.

When doing any type of tree work you should be taking precautions to quarantine this pest. Just my two cents...

Rob,

Take a few minutes tomorrow and phone your "State" legislators...both Representative and Senator. They will be able to give you the straight dope on what's going on.

Sounds like you talking about "pending" legislation. Ask 'em if there will be testing required as a part of this, Or are they just wanting more cash. Ask who is going to be responsible for enforcement.

If they can't give you answers while on the phone, find out what day you can call them back and get the answers.

Good luck

you have all these laws and we keep sending them back to the statehouse every year so they figure they have to do something no matter how screwed up it is.

Yea they seem to have time for all these other laws to be passed, but can't seem to get a grip on the REAL issues-tax relief, social security, unemployment, the list goes on. Unbelievable.

I totally agree with companies being legit and knowelgable. I just don't no if I necessarily agree with lic. and permits for every little thing that you do. In addition, I do not know about a four year degree to cut down a tree. Let's face it all these degrees and licenses and permits that we pay for does not translate into more $$$ for us. The more expenses go up the more our profit goes down, because lets face it you can only raise your prices so much and still be competitive.

They would grandfather alot of them in I would hope. I'm in favor of some permits mostly to weed out part timers without insurance but a college degree?? I know plenty of dummies that went to school and have no common brain.

I'm originally from upstate ny, every time i hear of something like this it makes me glad i'm not there anymore. About the only thing you need here is chemical license if you want to do applications, otherwise pretty much anything goes. oh yeah, the cutting season is about 38 weeks too, not counting cleanups. :)
