CVSA regulations only says it must be displayed on both sides of the truck and visible from a distance of 50 feet. DOT numbers do not apply to trailers while not in combination (being pulled)

Do you have to get a US DOT #? Can you just get a IN DOT #?
Ours is on bottom of door, below company name.

I understand the idea of the USDOT #. However, I was talking to a guy the other day that told me instead of the USDOT #, since I was not traveling out of the state, I could use a MDDOT.
This might be totally wrong. It's just what I've been told

What exactly is the benefit of having a DOT #
chuck bow

There is NO BENEFIT in mho , its a state law truecut with any truck trailer combo over 10,000 pounds rated( not what you haul but rated ) example a duall axle trailer with 3500 pound axles ( what comes standard on dual axle i think ) and being pulled with a half ton truck ( gvwr 6800) triggers the rules as you are now rated at 13800 .ITS A STATE LAW that has been in effect since i think jan of 2003 BUT is now being enforced around here at least .

Can the police enforce it, or only the DOT vans?
And is that law for the whole country, or seperate states? Mainly because in the past three years, ive only seen about 2 trucks with dot #'s on them.

im going to have a 1/2 ton truck and either a 5x10 or 6x10 trailer doesnt sound like ill be in danger.
chuck bow
02-12-2006, 06:35 PM
you better ck all your gvwr on truck and trailer (Single axle 6x10 is prob a 3500 pound axle ) before you can say your safe only the numbers will tell the truth

this cost nothing and you need a CC for electronic sig. for doing online, or print it out, fill it out and fax it, you'll get your number in the mail in about a week, when you fill it out needing only a registration nnumber you skip 2/3 of the form.
this is so easy and cost nothing, just do it.
here is the link to the US DOT

I would'nt bother with the state numbers since this is a federal law, If you buy a piece of equipment outside your state and want to go pick it up, then you don't have the proper numbers unless its a federal DOT #
Also, remember that a DOT Qualified commercial truck needs all the required Equipment. ie: fire extinquisher, 3 triangle reflectors or flairs, safety inspections, ect.

Your right stumper but ........... if you are not going out of state to do work or pickup a mower or something then all you need is IN DOT number for INTRASTATE TRAVEL i myself will never mow out of state or buy a mower out of state besides if i do buy out of state i will borrowa pickup to pull the trailer with because homeowners dont have to comply with the rules and you are right you have to have medical card 5 pound fire ex and breakdown triangles and DOT inspections on trucks and trailers which i have everything except the number and it has been applied for via express mail , I kind of guess the small time operator wont be in compliance and he will risk getting his stuff impounded and heavy fines because he wont think its nessary then again it may drive a few beer money mowers out of biz.... only time will tell

hello chuck bow just ran across your thread here and I was wondering why you mentioned you wouldn't go out of state to do work. I just moved to Indiana and I have several customers in Ohio. Do you know what I should be looking for? Can you shed a little light on this subject for me? Thank you in advance!
Is this law applicable to only commercially registered trucks (with lettering), or residentially registered trucks and trailers as well?

I believe it's only commercially registered trucks. As far as residents they don't need it.

I'm pretty sure its commercially lettered trucks. I have commercial registration but have residential plates with NO signage on my trucks/trailers so i'm good.
